On the first-person shooter side of things you’re spoiled for choice as blasting things in virtual reality will never get old. Whether that’s in an arcade style action game, or a serious milsim, there’s a good gun game for all tastes. So to help you settle on a choice, here’s an updated look at the best first-person shooters on the PSVR.

Raw Data

Committing Cyber Corp Crimes

Immerse yourself in Cyberpunk action with Raw Data. Bring down the corrupt Eden Corporation in 2271 as one of multiple heroes who all come with their own unique weapons and skill sets. They have their own benefits and downsides to trying them, so it caters to a lot of playstyles.

For example, run and gun as Bishop the Gun Cleric, or dip and dive off walls like a Cyber Ninja with Saija. Blast apart big bots and other Corpo Goons as you scale the tower alone or with a friend. Keep moving and don’t get swarmed as you try to bring justice to a corrupt far future.

A game from a company known for their interactive story telling, Bravo Team is an interesting yet oddly satisfying experiment from Super Massive Games. As a member of Bravo Team, it’s up to you and your teammates to make it out of enemy territory alive. But, it’s not going to be easy.

There’s an entire army in the way and with only an Aim Controller in your hand it’s an uphill fight the entire way. Gameplay is relatively responsive for the hardware, and firefights can become quite intense when it all works. There’s also a multiplayer mode if you fancy jumping right into a fight..

Space Junkies

Neon Bright Zero Gravity Deathmatches

A high-octane space-shooter from Ubisoft Montreal, Space Junkies puts a laser gun in your hand, gives you a pat on the back, and then throws you out of an airlock. But it’s the only way to get into the fight outside, which is brightly lit and very arcadey.

It’s a pure PvP thriller here as you and other astronauts try to blast chunks out of each other out in the deep cold void. There’s a ton of futuristic weaponry to try out, with a favorite of many being the laser swords. Customisation options are pretty, and the arenas all offer unique firefight situations in zero gravity.

Building up and managing your momentum in zero gravity isn’t difficult, but it’s easy to be out-maneuvered. Think of each engagement like a dogfight, but with your body instead of a fighter jet.

Killing Floor: Double Feature

A VR Spin On A Fan Favorite

A cult classic wave shooter with a VR spin. Killing Floor: Double Feature brings the fan favorite gameplay into virtual reality and it all blends together well into a visceral display of gore and gunplay. But this time around there’s a story.

It is minimal, but the gameplay is where it really shines. There’s a co-op mode to bring in a friend to the chaos in the campaign, or if you just want to sit back and blast Zeds there’s a traditional wave mode as well. It’s a solid pick for Killing Floor fans and though basic, it’s a good reason to break out the VR headset for a few hours.

Dead Second

Slick Slow Motion Shooting Sprees

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re starring in your own John Woo-directed movie then Dead Second from Spunge Games should be at the top of your list. This stylish arcade action game is all about fast reactions, slow-mo bullet time, and lots of gunplay.

You play as a gun for hire taking out the trash from the city Charles Bronson Deathwish style. Zip from cover to cover and rack up chaotic combos from chain kills. Plus, for every kill you land, you’ll earn a few precious seconds of slow-mo to set up your next shot, take a breather, or reposition. There’s a lot of gun variety and if you’re starving for a good light-gun game, you’ll definitely be eating well with Dead Second.

Resident Evil 4 VR Mode

Taking Leon Kennedy For A Spin

Resident Evil 4 has been around for a long while by this point. Multiple consoles, different platforms, lots of ports, and now it’s in VR and it’s still an absolute classic. Coated in a next-gen sheen and given a lot of polish plus some extra scenes and fights, Resident Evil 4 has never been better.

The best part of it being in VR, it’s free. You just need the base game to get going, and a compatible headset and you’re good. So now you can take on Los Illuminados and save the President’s daughter from a more terrifying perspective.

Bulletstorm VR

Craft Creative Chaotic Combos In VR

Bulletstorm was a bit of an odd duck when it first launched and arguably VR is what it was always meant for. Thanks to Incuvo, we can now step back into the boots of macho marine extraordinaire, Grayson Hunt.

After his ship crashes and his commander betrays him, Grayson has to takedown the mercenaries under his ex-CO’s thrall whilst surviving the dangerous flora and fauna of the planet. Creative kills are actively encouraged and the more points you earn, the quicker you can get your hands on the more fun toys. A truly bizarre and outlandish FPS game, if you never got around to Bulletstorm now is the perfect time.

Wanderer: The Fragments Of Fate

A Quantum Leap Approach To Storytelling

A remake that’s making a lot of noise, Wanderer: The Fragments Of Fate is an overhaul of the award-winning original and this time around it’s getting all the right kinds of attention for very good reason. Travel across different periods of time at will, meet a cast of chaotic characters across the timeline, and solve situations in any way you see fit.

For example, if you need a weapon in a firefight simply travel to another period of history that has one and then come back. Everything in the world can be interacted with and there’s always a new way to solve your particular problem. A very innovative combat meets VR puzzle game that more games should take ideas from, don’t sleep on Wanderer: The Fragments Of Fate.

The Light Brigade

Realistic Roguelike Action

Don’t let its simple exterior fool you, The Light Brigade from Funktronic Labs is a very in-depth first-person shooter. The world is shrouded in darkness and as a member of the Light Brigade, it’s up to you to bring back the light and defend the last refuge of humanity.

What follows in your journey is solid gunplay with weapons that can be customized and need to be realistically hand-loaded across a procedurally generated battlefield. A great game for gun nuts and those that love a tactical reload, the Light Brigade does a lot of things right and really nails that mix of challenge and arcade action.

Blood & Truth

Tech Demo Turned Heist Game

An action-packed VR game that found its roots in a tech demo way back when the PSVR first launched, Blood And Truth is an action movie hero simulator in all the best ways. You play as Ryan Marks, an ex-Special Forces soldier who has to save his family from a UK Criminal Gang.

What follows is a blood-soaked adventure with plenty of gunplay, wild set pieces, and great acting from a list of famous British faces. It’s an exhilarating adventure with a relatively interesting if predictable story and gunplay that’s satisfying and stylish to pull off. If you’re looking for a good excuse to don the plastic headset again, do it for Blood and Truth.

Blood And Truth can be played both standing and sitting, so you can still play it if you don’t have a ton of legroom.

Pistol Whip

First Person Shooter Fitness

An arcade shoot-to-the-beat style game, Pistol Whip from Cloudhead Games is a music-filled gunfight in a neon-colored world. The level constantly flows around you and you’ll have to dip, dive, and dual wield those guns accurately to get to the end.

The flow of combat is a constant rhythm and you’ll need to adjust to those melodies and time your shots with them in order to succeed. Featuring tons of songs, plenty of guns to unlock, 35 levels, daily challenges, mod support, and a campaign, there’s plenty of targets to shoot in Pistol Whip.

Mod Support can be found in the Remix Menu and it’s highly recommended that you check it out as there’s some fantastic player-made additions to the game in there.

After The Fall

It’s The 80’s, But Not As We Know It

From the chaotic crew that created Arizona Sunshine comes After The Fall, a similarly styled game with a higher focus on horror. Ideal for a party of friends, you and your crew are tasked with taking on the relentless hordes of undead and viral mutations in ice-covered 1980s LA.

There are three survivors to choose from and an array of deadly tools to wield such as close combat melee weapons, guns of all sizes, and even homemade crafted items. It’s a fast-paced game with a lot of Left 4 Dead energy and it’s something the PSVR does particularly well.

Whilst you can play through After The Fall solo, it’s highly recommended to match with randoms or bring in some friends as it’s balanced for a team of players.

Immortal Legacy: The Jade Cipher

Become The Tomb Raider

A VR game with a strange style yet oddly compelling story, Immortal Legacy: The Jade Cipher from Viva Games is worth running through at least once to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. You play as Tyre, a former Special Forces soldier who’s trapped on a mysterious Chinese island.

Deep within the Dragon Triangle, the isle of Yingzhou is both beautiful and haunting. Monstrous creatures stalk the lands, ancient guardians arise from their slumber, and crawling all over it all are heavily armed mercenaries. There’s puzzles to solve, a cast of colorful characters to meet, and combat encounters that can usually be tackled in any way you like.

Immortal Legacy is a little rough around the edges, but once it gets going you can start to see past it for all its odd charm.

Chroma Gun VR

Rainbow Coloured Brain Teasers

The VR addition to an already very successful first-person puzzle game, Chroma Gun VR lets you experience the brain-teasing tests firsthand in virtual reality. As part of Chroma Tec’s latest test subject, it’s up to you to methodically test their latest devices in a series of chambers.

Use the highly advanced Chroma Gun to color walls or convert droids to help work your way through the different chambers that get progressively trickier as the game goes on. It’s a simple concept that carries a lot of the charisma of Portal and provides a satisfying series of tricky puzzles to solve. If you enjoy brain teasers, you’ll have fun with Chroma Gun.

The developers state that the game is primarily meant to be played sitting down. So it’s perfect for small setups.

Wolfenstein: Cyber Pilot

Burning Down The Reich From Within

Though it was released just a day before Wolfenstein: Young Blood, Cyber Pilot is arguably the better of the two new-era Wolfenstein games. Set in an alternate Paris during the 1980s, your goal is to help the French Resistance in the best way possible, by stomping Nazis with giant robots.

Part Mech Warrior, part power fantasy, Cyber Pilot is an FPS that lets you sit down comfortably as you remotely control various clanking, and stomping droids. Though it’s a fairly short experience, there’s a lot of joy you can get from barbecuing Fascists with a flamethrower or grinding them into a paste with a big chain gun. It’s cheap, quick, and oh-so-satisfying to play, especially if you’re short on space.

How Long To Beat has Wolfenstein: Cyber Pilot at an average playtime of one hour and 53 minutes to hit the title screen, but six hours if you want to go full completionist.

Solaris: Offworld Combat

Far Future Firefights

A simple arcade shooter, Solaris: Offworld Combat is a fast multiplayer game where two teams of four face off against each other to see who’s the best. The group that has ownership of the Control Point wins and kills add to your score, simple, easy, fast.

Staying mobile is encouraged so expect a lot of whipping your torso around to deal with new threats. Plus, there’s a sprinting and slide option for John Woo-esque shooting-style points. There are seven maps, a range of one and two-handed weapons as well as Utilities to aid you in combat. Add on top the various cosmetics, Weekly Challenges, 50 levels, and unlockables to earn and you’ve got a fun evening ahead of you.

Pavlov

Realistic Reloading That Will Get You Killed

If you’re looking for a VR FPS game that puts a lot of weight on realism then you can’t go wrong with Pavlov. An old favorite that’s still getting a lot of love, it’s a great game with a lot of variety to it once you start to dig into its toybox.

Think of it like a slower-paced Counter-Strike and you’re in the ballpark. There’s a range of game modes including King Of The Hill, Gun Game, Teams, and Free For All as well as multi-crew options for a few vehicles, notably tanks. The proximity voice chat provides a lot of laughs and there are tons of guns to tinker with in-game or on the firing range for practice. If you need a new FPS VR game, this is highly recommended.

There’s quite a steep learning curve to some of the weapons, so spend some time in the Firing Range learning how they reload, it’s often more complicated than you would think.

The Persistence

Those Mutants Will Never Give Up

A challenging roguelike set onboard a horrifying Space Colony that’s overrun with twisted mutants and frightening aberrations that were once Colonists. The Persistence has you navigating around a constantly changing maze of malfunctioning ship stations and destroyed decks.

There’s loot, upgrades for your suit and weapons as well as new ways to make the monsters stay dead just waiting around the corner, so get out there and start exploring. For those who want some company, there’s also an asymmetrical option that involves using a tablet or phone to operate ship systems like doors and monster lures. It’s a great blend of horror and FPS elements that is sure to give you a fright or two.

The developers recommend a stable internet connection for mobile players as data charges may apply otherwise.

Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR

The Wildest West We’ve Ever Seen

A dynamic and fast-paced VR FPS game from MIROWIN, Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR is a classic Western shooter with a modern arcade coat of paint. There’s a huge army of banditos gunning for you and you’ll need to stay on the move to avoid their gunfire.

There’s a massive arsenal of weapons ranging from the trusty Six-Shooter to the classic Chicago Gangster Tommy Gun and more. The soundtrack is filled with head-bobbing Rock numbers and there are a lot of jokes and cynical gags at the game’s expense to add some levity to all the mass murder. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be and there are plenty of interesting and vivid locales to visit as you bash through the story.

This is a very active game, so make sure your play space isn’t full of hazards or breakables. Also remember to take breaks as you’ll get tired very quickly.
