Sonic Racing Gets New Update

Key Takeaways

  • Community Challenges have been added to Sonic Racing, giving players the chance to unlock rewards like Idol Shadow.
  • Players can participate in Time Trials to get Popstar Amy.

The Sonic Racing mobile game has just received a new update, adding new challenges and unlockable characters. Sonic Racing is just one of the many Sonic the Hedgehog mobile spin-offs developed by Hardlight, released for Apple Arcade on iOS and macOS devices in 2019 to promote Team Sonic Racing. Just like its console counterpart, Sonic Racing sees Sonic and his supporting cast compete against each other to see who has the fastest vehicle across various colorful tracks as a Sega-themed answer to Mario Kart.

Sonic Racing has seen numerous updates over the years, with many of these patches adding new environments and playable characters, like the Casino Park Zone from Sonic Heroes or the classic version of Sonic that serves as a secondary playable character in such entries as Sonic X Shadow Generations and Sonic Forces. There have also been plenty of bug fixes to address issues that players report, as well as adding new features like online Leaderboards that give players a chance to win prizes and pair their skills against other Sonic fans around the world.

Team Sonic Racing 2 Should Be More Like Crash Team Racing

Crash Team Racing was a perfect tribute to its franchise’s history, and Sonic’s own history allows a similar kart racer after Sonic Team Racing.

Earlier this week, Sonic Racing received another update that adds new game modes and unlockable versions of characters like Shadow the Hedgehog and Amy Rose. Community Challenges task players with working together to clear special objectives and earn rewards like the music-themed Idol Shadow skin for the ever-popular Shadow the Hedgehog. There is also Popstar Amy, who can be unlocked by completing Time Trials.

This Sonic Racing update is just the latest in a series of new Sonic the Hedgehog content released throughout 2024 and beyond. Last month saw the launch of Sonic X Shadow Generations, which updated the 2011 original while adding a new story campaign in honor of The Year of Shadow. The Ultimate Lifeform is also set to race his way into Sonic Dream Team as a playable character, and Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble added a Shadow-themed alternate costume as part of its Sega Costume Pack.

Sonic Racing is continuing Sega’s 2024 Year of Shadow event by releasing a new version of Shadow as part of its latest update, which also includes a few new special challenges. This past year has certainly been an exciting time for Sonic fans thanks to a wave of new games and content – all leading up to the cinematic release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on December 20.
