Overwatch 2 Reveals New Hero Hazard

Key Takeaways

Overwatch 2 has unveiled its newest hero, a Scottish tank named Hazard. The character was revealed in a brief video (below) showcasing Hazard and his group, the Phreaks, attempting to steal a volatile, unknown substance from a lab. Hazard appears to be punk-rock, with the characteristic never-say-die attitude that you can associate with the majority of Overwatch characters.

We don’t know exactly what Hazard’s abilities will be, but the way he fights in the animated short could give us an indicator of what to expect. In the video, we can see Hazard ingest the aforementioned substance, causing him to sprout crystalline spikes. He then dives into the opposition, firing an arm cannon and spawning crystal chunks on the battlefield.

Hazardous Warfare

We won’t have to wait very long to find out the specifics of Hazard’s kit as Overwatch 2 is allowing players to participate in a playtest this weekend before the hero’s full release during December’s Season 14.

Meanwhile, Overwatch 2’s temporary ‘Classic’ game mode is ongoing. This mode has followed the lead of Fortnite and Apex Legends in bringing the game back to its launch state, catering to players nostalgic for the early days of Overwatch in 2016. A cool twist on the nostalgia-baiting format is that Overwatch Classic will progress through iconic metas from the last 8 years, including the oft-maligned ‘Goats’ era of 2019.

So far, the mode has been a huge success for Blizzard, with players calling for it to become a permanent fixture in Overwatch 2. Blizzard’s initial announcement certainly made it seem like the developer is open to the idea, too. In the spirit of the original Overwatch, a limit on the number of times you could pick the same hero was removed over the weekend, leading players to beg Blizzard to bring the limit back as they faced the unstoppable power of 5 Widowmaker, 1 Mercy compositions.

Overwatch 2 is free-to-play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
