A special new collection based on Studio Ghibli‘s movie Princess Mononoke has been released by the outdoor brand, Foxfire. This new collection of outdoor clothes takes inspiration from the world of Princess Mononoke to create a special look for fans who love not only Studio Ghibli, but the great outdoors. The designs draw from the characters and designs in the movie, and the environmental message behind the story itself.
This is not the first time that Foxfire has teamed up with Studio Ghibli for a collection. Last year, the brand also made a series of clothing inspired by My Neighbor Totoro. But considering the story of Princess Mononoke, this collection seems even more fitting than last year. It includes a wide variety of items, from jackets to mugs. Keep in mind that Foxfire is considered a premium outdoor brand, so both the quality of the items and their prices will reflect that status.

A Closer Look at the Collection
There are several pieces in the Foxfire x Princess Mononoke collection, most of which is gear for facing the great outdoors in style. Many pieces in the collection feature a new print that Foxfire developed just for this, called “Fisheye Mononoke Camo,” a pink and orange pattern with creatures from the movie. The brand also made a special patch that looks like leading heroine San’s memorable mask. Both of these design details appear on several items.
One of the most striking items in the collection is a red hood that looks like the one Ashitaka wears in the movie. There are also two outdoor jackets, one that uses the Fisheye Mononoke Camo pattern for the inner lining and the other a more subtle fleece. These jackets also have small details like the Princess Mononoke symbols on the buttons, and the movie’s name on the zipper pulls. There is also a beanie with the Nightwalker on it, and a warm white hat with ear flaps and San’s mask patch.
The Nightwalker also features on a white sweatshirt, while the Great Forest Spirit is printed onto a fishing vest. The Great Forest Spirit and the Fisheye Mononoke Camo also feature on a shoulder bag and a tote bag. And for people that may be less interested in outdoor gear, there are also two simple camping mugs, one for San and one for Ashitaka. The Princess Mononoke collection ranges in price from the down jacket which costs 74,800 yen ($483 USD) to the mugs which cost 4,620 yen ($30 USD) each.

Why this Collection is Especially Brilliant
Princess Mononoke‘s setting is based on a real island off the southern tip of Japan called Yakushima. The forests in the movie all draw inspiration from this beautiful real-life location, and the story shows creator Hayao Miyazaki’s strong stance when it comes to environmentalism. MyAnimeList describes the plot as;
When an Emishi village is attacked by a fierce demon boar, the young prince Ashitaka puts his life at stake to defend his tribe. With its dying breath, the beast curses the prince’s arm, granting him demonic powers while gradually siphoning his life away. Instructed by the village elders to travel westward for a cure, Ashitaka arrives at Tatara, the Iron Town, where he finds himself embroiled in a fierce conflict: Lady Eboshi of Tatara, promoting constant deforestation, stands against Princess San and the sacred spirits of the forest, who are furious at the destruction brought by the humans. As the opposing forces of nature and mankind begin to clash in a desperate struggle for survival, Ashitaka attempts to seek harmony between the two, all the while battling the latent demon inside of him. Princess Mononoke is a tale depicting the connection of technology and nature, while showing the path to harmony that could be achieved by mutual acceptance.
While Princess Mononoke may be set in the 14th century, the message that Miyazaki is sharing is one that remains relevant today.
Thus, considering the deep environmental message at the core of Princess Mononoke, a collaboration with an outdoor brand is perfect. Fans of the movie can get out and enjoy the forest that Mononoke herself worked so hard to defend, all while showing the world their love for the movie. Studio Ghibli has done many special clothing collaborations in the past, but this may well be one of the most well-suited. If you love Princess Mononoke and the message behind the movie, you need to look into this collection.
Most items in the Princess Mononoke collection went on sale November 15th, and can be ordered through the Foxfire website here.
