There’s nothing quite like a movie about a deadly shark, and there have been countless since the classic 1975 horror movie Jaws, which has some compelling themes. The Netflix thriller Under Paris about sharks in Paris will get a sequel, as reported by Variety. Nassim Lyes, who plays police officer Adil, and Bérénice Bejo, who plays one of the main characters Sophia, are returning.
In the original Under Paris, which was released on Netflix on June 5th, 2024, Adil and Sophia hope that the Paris mayor will decide that the planned triathlon shouldn’t happen considering that a shark attacked and killed a man. They team up with an environmentalist named Mika (Léa Léviant) to figure out how to move forward.

Netflix Really Made This Actor The Villain Two Different Times
There is one actor who plays the villain in two different projects on Netflix, from a supernatural teen drama to a time travel horror movie.
Xavier Gens directed Under Paris and his previous movies include Hitman, Farang, and Budapest. It will be interesting to see what story he tells in the Under Paris sequel. As Gens said earlier this year in an interview with Variety of a sequel, “it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water.” That definitely sounds like an unforgettable horror movie setting. Right away, fans can picture the main and minor characters struggling to survive while watching this natural disaster take place.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gens talked about being a fan of the classic horror movie Jaws, which inspired his own shark film. Gens also talked about the tone of the movie:
“I wanted to be able to film all the shark scenes like documentaries. I wanted the first ten minutes of the film to be very intense, very immersive. And I wanted the tension and action scenes to be at the level of an American film.”
Legendary author Stephen King often shares his opinions on pop culture on X, and he tweeted about his love for Under Paris in June 2024. According to The Independent, he wrote:
“I thought
UNDER PARIS
would be a jokey movie, like
SHARKNADO
, but Twitter convinced me to give it a watch, and it’s really quite good.”
There’s no denying the popularity of the Sharknado franchise. However, what makes Under Paris so great is it’s a fun and entertaining movie that also has a smart message about the environment. It’s also refreshing to watch intelligent and compassionate characters. The movie definitely delivers a great balance of scary moments and clever ones, and it will be interesting to see Sophia and Aldi again in the sequel.
According to Variety, filming for the second Under Paris movie might begin at the end of 2026. The movie is described as being in the early development stages.
