Mortal Kombat 1 Ghostface Is Billy Loomis

Mortal Kombat 1 Ghostface Is Billy Loomis

Key Takeaways

  • The killer behind the Ghostface mask in Mortal Kombat 1 has been revealed.
  • It’s none other than Billy Loomis, one of the original two killers from the first 1996 film.
  • One of the intro clashes even paraphrases an iconic Billy line.

Ghostface slashed their way into Mortal Kombat 1 today, and like any good Scream flick, fans have been eagerly awaiting the big reveal of who’s under the mask.

Thankfully, NetherRealm has made it easy to find out. When fighting against the Woodsboro Killer, using a fatality or fatal blow will reveal none other than Billy Loomis (although, as fans point out, he looks more like Johnny in a wig).

Two out of three Ghostfaces have already been identified.

Loomis was one of the original two killers. Boyfriend to Sidney Prescott (and lets be honest, Stu), he spearheaded the first Ghostface murder spree. Only fitting then that he be the one under the mask in this new crossover.

There Are A Bunch Of Little Scream References, Too

NetherRealm clearly has a lot of reverance for Scream, and the intro fights are a great showcase of that. Not only are there references to the films in the dialogue, but Ghostface even uses the same modulator as Billy (and other killers in the series) to get that iconic, unnerving Roger Jackson voice.

Speaking of intro dialogue, if two Ghostfaces clash (which, as of Scream 6, isn’t unprecedented), they’ll even ask for each other’s favourite scary movie. And of course, Ghostface says Stab, the fictional in-universe retelling of the Woodsboro murders.

Omni-Man, of course, says “fu** movies, nothing beats a good book”.

One of the most inventive callbacks is a fatality which sees Johnny Cage lose control of Ghostface while playing Mortal Kombat 1, only to be killed by another Ghostface behind him on the sofa in ‘real life’.

This is no doubt a reference to the meta, movie within a movie within a movie opening of Scream 4 that layers Stab on top of Stab on top of the actual film.

Furthering the idea of Billy being behind the mask, Rain has a chance to say that scary movies made Ghostface a psycho, to which he paraphrases Billy’s line from the original film: “Movies don’t make psychos, they make psychos more creative.”

What’s especially interesting about this callback is that it’s performed by Jackson, whereas in the movie, Skeet Ulrich says the line.

Don’t you blame the movies. Movies don’t create the psychos, movies make psychos more creative.

There are a lot of nods to the series, I could go on all day. But before I get into any more of them, I’ve got a quick errand to run. I’ll be right back…
