Huge WW2 MMO is like a more realistic Battlefield V, and it’s exploding on Steam

The greatest war games are all about scale. Perhaps you remember Medal of Honor Allied Assault, the superlative FPS from 2002. By today’s standards it may look antiquated, but back then, the Omaha Beach level was bigger and more alive than anything you’d seen before – it really felt like a huge-scale battle, with thousands of soldiers and vehicles. Battlefield V can also feel suitably expansive. Likewise Hell Let Loose. But there’s one unique MMO that is bigger than all of them, and still, somehow, manages to slip beneath the radar. A combination of Civilization’s building and logistics and the co-op tactics of Commandos, it’s just gotten an enormous new update, and now, Foxhole is close to breaking its all-time record on Steam.

A WW2 game and MMO with a fantastic twist, every single character in Foxhole is a player – there are no NPCs. Matches last for weeks and they’re fought between multiple opposing forces, who compete over chunks of the map one skirmish at a time. You have vehicles, artillery, and of course small arms. But none of it comes easily. In fact, every single piece of equipment – every round of ammunition – has to be built by players and delivered to the frontlines. For some people, Foxhole is a brutal war game. For others, it’s a high-pressure building and logistics sim.

And now it’s even better. The new Foxhole infantry update is the biggest of 2024, and it overhauls almost every aspect of boots-on-the-ground combat. First up, soldiers now have access to anti-tank weaponry. There’s a new melee system for close-quarters fighting, and medics have a much greater role now owing to the fact that field hospitals can be built in frontline trench networks – rather than shuttling wounded troopers back to base and healing them there, anyone playing medic can get stuck in right at the tip of the spear.

There are new facilities for building and shipping infantry guns, soldiers can create custom loadouts, and there’s a revised system for suppressive fire. Minefields are now permanent and persistent, and there are two more tanks, the 90T-V Nemesis and the Gallagher Brigand Mk. 1. The update is completely free and since its release, Foxhole’s concurrent player count has jumped significantly.

In the last 24 hours, Foxhole’s concurrent player count has peaked at 10,821. That’s the highest it’s been since October 2022, and very close to the all-time record of 11,791. Another update is planned for 2025 which aids airborne combat and units for the first time. Until then, Foxhole still has a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam, and you can try it for yourself right here.
