In Helldivers 2, the Automatons and the Terminids are the main obstacles to achieving galactic freedom, but one would have believed that another should have made its way by this time. The highly sophisticated and intelligent Illuminate faction has been teased for so long, at least implicitly, but it has yet to arrive. While the community will likely be patient enough for its potential introduction, the long wait emphasizes a particular concern that may affect the perception of both Helldivers 2 and Arrowhead Game Studios.
Since Helldivers 2‘s release, there have been signs that teased the potential return of the Illuminate. From the emergence of a black hole to players claiming to see something on the galactic map, Arrowhead has had many opportunities to introduce the faction into the game but has yet to take it. With nearly a year and no confirmation on when the Illuminate, an established foe in the Helldivers universe, may appear, the potential third faction could take even longer.

Helldivers 2 is Biding Its Time Longer Than It Needs to at This Point
Helldivers 2 has yet to deliver one piece of content, which Arrowhead Game Studios has teased and perhaps should have already added.
Why There Might Not Be a Fourth Faction for Quite a While in Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 will need to spill the beans about the Illuminate sooner rather than later if it wants to keep players’ hopes alive for a third enemy faction. If it doesn’t, it could mean a long wait until a new foe appears, or the game will stick to just three groups that stand against galactic freedom.
The Importance of Adding a Fourth Faction to Helldivers 2
Fighting the Terminids and Automatons can already lead to fun experiences, but having another group to go against would be refreshing a year later in the game’s lifespan. Having three different types of groups to fight means diverse strategizing and combat, making Helldivers 2 more engaging and exciting than most other games of the same genre it shares.
It also means that there’s potential for more content, as Arrowhead has more opportunities to get creative and put in whatever will make people more likely to keep playing. Explaining a new Helldivers 2 enemy faction won’t even be difficult, as it is a game based on exploring different planets and opens up many possibilities.
Helldivers 2 is one of the best co-op games on Steam and can likely be said the same for the other platforms it’s on. If it wants to remain that way, it needs more reasons to keep people playing it beyond the two factions that players are now incredibly familiar with and every passing day is a reminder of what it currently lacks.
