From now until December 12, PC gamers on Steam have the chance to play Swap Fire for free. Steam users are treated to freebies on a regular basis. Sometimes these freebies are games that Steam users can keep forever as long as they’re claimed within a certain window, and other times these are games that are made free-to-play for a limited time.
It’s unclear exactly which category Swap Fire falls under right now. Currently, Swap Fire is free on Steam, but it’s possible that it’s simply free-to-play as opposed to free-to-keep. Regardless, those interested in trying the game out have until December 12 to do so.

Swap Fire is free on Steam until December 12, giving those interested a few more weeks to try the unique FPS without paying a dime. For those unfamiliar with Swap Fire, it was originally a Wii U exclusive released on the eShop. However, Nintendo has since shut down the Wii U eShop, making Swap Fire and other games lost to the void. Luckily for those in favor of game preservation, developer Midnight Status has decided to bring Swap Fire back through Steam. Swap Fire is a local multiplayer FPS that utilizes Steam’s Remote Play Together feature. Come December 12, Swap Fire will retail for $9.99. Again, it’s unclear if those that play during the free period get to keep access to the game, or if they too will be prompted to pay $9.99 if they want to keep playing.
Swap Fire is Free on Steam
For those unfamiliar with Swap Fire, it’s a first-person shooter where players swap places with their opponents by shooting them. This unique mechanic is employed in a variety of traditional FPS match types, like King of the Hill and Capture the Flag, along with more original modes. It earned mixed reviews at the time of its release and Steam users have been expressing similar opinions, but it doesn’t hurt to try it out for free.
PC gamers have had a variety of free games to claim for their digital libraries this month. For example, last week, Half-Life 2 was free on Steam to celebrate the critically-acclaimed first-person shooter’s 20th anniversary. Those that didn’t claim Half-Life 2 while it was free have missed their chance, but the good news is that it is a whopping 90% off at the time of this writing.
PC gamers willing to expand beyond Steam have had even more free games to claim. The current Epic Games Store free games are Castlevania Anniversary Collection, a compilation consisting of eight games in one, and puzzle game Snakebird Complete. These freebies will be available until Thursday, November 21 at 10:00am CT, at which point they will be swapped out and replaced by Beholder.
