I Am Future is a survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world. When your character wakes up inside a capsule, they find themselves on a rooftop, surrounded by a world flooded with water. With nature having taken its revenge on humanity, survival is the only thing that matters.
There’s a lot to craft and explore on the rooftop. But above all, the most important thing is to eat. Your character will get hungry, and the most effective method to satisfy that hunger is farming. In this guide, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about farming.
Required Resources For Farming
At the start of the game, there are many things to build and collect on your rooftop. Although there are plenty of materials for crafting, food options to satisfy your Hunger stat are limited. The foods you find also have low satiety levels.
Additionally, because items like Lettuce Leaf and Blueberries take a long time to respawn and are sparse, farming becomes essential for survival. To farm, you need to grow plants, and for that, you’ll need Garden Beds. Here are the resources required to build a Garden Bed:

How To Obtain Resources For The Garden Beds
There are various objects on the rooftop that yield Planks, making them an inexhaustible resource thanks to the rooftop trees. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for Fertilizer. While you can find a small amount of Fertilizer by exploring the roof, you can also purchase up to two units of Fertilizer from the vending machine next to Earl, the talking refrigerator.
To buy Fertilizer from this vending machine, you’ll need a fish called Scaled Hardtooth. Each Fertilizer requires five of these fish, so you’ll need to catch ten of them. To catch this fish, use Clam as bait. If you don’t have any Clams, don’t worry; you can get them in two ways:
- By fishing without bait, you have a chance of catching Clams.
- You can craft Mollusk Bait using Biomass, which is plentiful on the rooftop. Using Mollusk Bait guarantees a Clam catch.
Another method to obtain Fertilizer is through stores, which you can access by sending a drone. To unlock drone access, you’ll need to repair the Smart Tower. Once repaired, you’ll be able to send drones to nearby stores. However, you’ll also need U-coins to buy Fertilizer at these stores. Note that the only way to get U-coins is by building a Crypto Farm.
What To Do After Building The Garden Beds
Building a Garden Bed is just the beginning. The next step is to find seeds to plant. Here are some seeds you can gather at the start of the game by exploring the rooftop and collecting wild plants:
- Blueberry Seeds
- Brightflower Seeds
- Lettuce Seeds
- Nightshroom Spores
Once you have a seed, you can plant it in a Garden Bed. Each plant has a specific growth time, so you’ll need to wait until it grows. However, plants need water while they grow. To water them, you’ll need to collect water using Empty Bottles or a Bucket from the fishing area below the roof.
Since the water is salty, it can’t be used directly on plants; you’ll need to boil it over a Campfire or in a Kettle to produce freshwater. This can then be used to water your plants.
Another thing to keep in mind is that plants are divided into two types based on growth time: some grow during the day, while others grow at night. Be sure to check on their needs at the appropriate times of day.
How To Farm Effectively
Building just one Garden Bed won’t be enough to keep you well-supplied with food. Aim to build at least five Garden Beds to make sure you have enough resources. Adjust your playstyle to focus on acquiring more Fertilizer. At the very least, planting five or six Nightshroom seeds will provide the resources you need for simple recipes like Baked Mushrooms.
Naturally, the more Garden Beds you have and the more nutritious plants you grow, the better. When choosing what to plant, consider not only food needs but also other uses, such as creating fuel for Biogenerators.
Efficient Watering Methods
The more Garden Beds you build, the more water your plants will need, so find practical watering solutions. Constantly hauling water from the dock can get exhausting; consider building at least two Water Barrels at the start.
This way, you can use three or four Buckets to quickly fill the Water Barrels from the dock, keeping your water supply stable without letting your campfire go out. Also, when it rains, the Water Barrels will refill, adding an advantage.
Later on, when you build a Sprinkler, it will automatically water your plants, easing your watering tasks. However, keep in mind that the Sprinkler requires electricity.
Another useful tool to know about is the Water Pump. Avoiding repeated trips to the dock will save you time. The Water Pumps unlock with Mariquinn’s missions, and you’ll need a Non-Reactive Injector to build it. Once you have this item and the mission, use the pump-marked signs on the roof to direct water up to your roof garden.
Later, you can upgrade Water Pumps to increase their water capacity and even purify saltwater into fresh water.
Additionally, when you see the broken minion near the Smart Tower, you’ll be able to start building minions. Minions assist with various tasks, and if assigned as Water Carriers, they’ll use the fresh water in storage to water your plants.
With the Aquatic Genius upgrade module, they can even fill your Sprinklers with water. But note that achieving these tasks might be challenging in the early stages of the game.
What’s Different About Electrified Garden Beds
After obtaining the blueprint for Electrified Garden Beds, you can begin building them. You’ll need the following materials:
Resource |
Amount |
---|---|
Foam Panel |
4 |
Light Bulb |
1 |
Microchip |
1 |
Electrified Garden Beds have one main advantage over standard Garden Beds: they allow plants to grow continuously, regardless of day or night conditions. This feature saves you time. However, these beds consume a lot of electricity, so it’s best to prepare your power supply beforehand. Building them early might strain your power resources.
Types Of Plants You Can Grow
The plants you can grow in Garden Beds are listed in the table below. Remember, you’ll need their seeds to grow them.
Plant Name |
Growth Time |
---|---|
Almond |
Day |
Blueberries |
Day |
Brightflower |
Day |
Cheese |
Day |
Coffee Beans |
Day |
Hot Pepper |
Day |
Lettuce Leaf |
Day |
Lunar Tuber |
Night |
Nightshroom |

Tomato |

Keep in mind that watering frequency varies by plant type. Some only need watering once, while others require it twice.
Where To Find Plant Seeds?
You will need seeds to farm. Some seeds can be obtained in the early stages of the game, while others become available much later. There are three methods to obtain seeds:
- Collecting wild plants or the plants you’ve planted on the rooftop.
- Sending drones to markets via the Expedition method.
- Collecting seed packages found on the rooftop.
Here’s where you can find the seeds:

How To Protect Your Farms
While your plants are growing in the Garden Beds, there is one danger you need to watch out for: leeches that spawn at night. Their behavior will change depending on the difficulty level. If you’re playing on Domestic or Cozy difficulty, the leeches will not eat the plants in your garden beds.
However, if you’re playing on Normal difficulty, they may target and start eating the plants in your garden beds. Therefore, the best thing to do is to place your Garden Beds away from the purple flowers where the leeches spawn. Additionally, you can deal with the leeches depending on what you have:
- If you don’t have anything, you can carry them away and wait until morning.
- If you have StopWeed Spray, Anti-Parasite Spray, or Conquer Contamination Spray, you can kill them.
Remember, if a leech eats your plant in the garden bed, it will turn into Infected Weed.
You can also protect your plants from leeches with the UV Tower, but it only affects a small area. Therefore, you can force the leeches to pass through a specific area with fences, and then use the UV Tower to kill any leeches that enter that area.
