When James Gunn rebooted the DCU and decided to leave the DCEU in the past, it was well known that most of the actors and actresses were being left in the past as well. However, it looks like there are at least a few people who are being allowed to make the jump.
Blue Beetle was one of the final DCEU movies and while the movie struggled a bit in the box office, it was a film that was relatively popular among DC Comics fans thanks in part to it being a completely different type of superhero origin story. In fact, it was popular enough that not only is the comic book story arriving in the DCU, but the man who played the character is coming over as well.
Blue Beetle Actor Making The Jump To DCU
Earlier this month, Xolo Maridueña teased that he’s set to reprise his Blue Beetle role in an animated series from DC Studios. “There’s only one Blue Beetle,” the Kobra Kai actor teased in an interview with Hablemos de Cine about voicing the Latino superhero in the upcoming animated series. He also gave a little bit of info about what form the animated series is going to take as he said he’s very excited and said that it’s going to be the next great anime.
It is of course possible The Blue Beetle star just meant he was talking about an animated show rather than the very specific animation style that is generally considered anime. Earlier this year, Gunn and his DC cohorts did announce than an animated Blue Beetle show was on the way and along with Xolo, the writer and director of the 2023 movie are being brought on to helm the new project.
The 2023 Blue Beetle film focuses on Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who returns home to try and figure out what he wants to do with his adult and professional life. After running into a woman who is on the run from an evil corporation Jaime gains superpowers when an alien Blue Beetle scarab grafts onto him. To some degree, the suit that Jamie gains seems a bit like a DC version of Iron Man as the alien suit comes with a kind of AI interface that teaches him how to use the new weapon and walk him through how to be man who takes down the evil corporation.
Interestingly, Maridueña is one of the only actors or actresses that’s been given the chance to bring his DCEU character into the DCU. There are plenty of others who were hoping they’d be given the chance to do so but were never afforded the opportunity. While Blue Beetle is keeping most of its top people on board for the animated series, former Supergirl actress Sasha Calle recently detailed just how heartbroken she was when she wasn’t allowed to do the same. The actress felt as though she was mislead about DC Comics’ plans when she signed on as the Kryptonian woman who Milly Alcock will play in the DCU.
