All Characters And How To Unlock Them In Lego Horizon Adventures

Unlike the mainline Horizon games, you don’t only play as Aloy in Lego Horizon Adventures. Whether you’re playing on your own or with friends in co-op, you can choose between four different characters. If you’ve played the first Horizon game, you’ll know who these characters are and what role they play in the story.

Each character has their ups and downs in Lego Horizon Adventures, but which is the one for you?

However, you don’t get access to these characters from the start of the game. You have to do specific things to unlock them before you can switch to them for levels. Thankfully, what you need to do to unlock these characters is quite simple. You don’t need to worry too much about how you’re playing through the game.

How To Unlock All Characters

The character upgrades screen showing all levels in Lego Horizon Adventures.

While Aloy is available right from the start of the game, the three other characters (Varl, Teersa, and Erend) are all unlocked by progressing through the main story missions. There are four main chapters in the game, in addition to the prologue and epilogue, but you don’t need to play all of them.

You’ll find details on exactly what you need to do to unlock each character below.

Character

How To Unlock

Aloy

Available from the start of the game.

Varl

Complete the Face to the Sun level in Chapter One.

Teersa

Complete Chapter One.

Erend

Complete the Shivering Summit level in Chapter Two.

You’ll only start leveling up characters once you have them unlocked and you start playing with them. They’ll lag behind if you don’t switch from Aloy at any point.

How To Play Co-Op

Once you’ve unlocked more than one character, you’ll be able to start playing co-op. To do so, connect a second controller to whatever system you’re playing on, and then press X/A to add a second character to the game.

Much like if you’re playing solo, you’ll also be able to switch which character you’re playing as at the start of a mission. You’ll see them all lined up, so simply switch to the one you want before continuing to the next area.
