Key Takeaways
- The Game Awards have revealed its list of GOTY nominees this year, which include Black Myth: Wukong.
- However, despite its massive popularity earlier this year, Black Myth: Wukong has now become the lowest ever rated GOTY nominee.
- This is also during a year in which highly-rated titles such as Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Silent Hill 2 were all snubbed.
The Game Awards have finally dropped its list of this year’s GOTY nominees, and just as expected, almost nobody is happy with the results. That’s mainly because Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is on the list, despite being a DLC expansion, though there are plenty of other people unhappy about well-liked titles like Silent Hill 2, Helldivers 2, and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth not making the cut.
Of course, to actually have your favorite included, another game would need to be cut – the question is which one? Outside of Shadow of the Erdtree, the only title that you could make an argument for not deserving its place is Black Myth: Wukong, as it’s actually the lowest ever rated title to become a GOTY nominee at The Game Awards, sitting at 81 on Metacritic.
Black Myth: Wukong Is The Game Awards’ Lowest Ever Rated GOTY Nominee
The problem is, literally every single other game that has ever been nominated for a GOTY award at The Game Awards has a higher score. The lowest score for a game before Black Myth: Wukong’s nomination was jointly held by Control and A Plague Tale: Requiem, which could only manage scores of 82 on Metacritic for a variety of reasons.
Other games that are quite close to Black Myth: Wukong’s score include Stray (83), Resident Evil Village (84), and The Outer Worlds (85). Even PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Hearthstone were more highly-rated, but Black Myth: Wukong differs slightly in that there are games that were released this year that are much more highly-rated, yet were snubbed for the grand prize anyway.

Every Nominee At The Game Awards 2024
Every nominee for The Game Awards 2024 has just been announced.
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth sits at a score of 89 on Metacritic, which probably has Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios wondering what it actually has to do to get a nomination, while other high-profile titles like Silent Hill 2 Remake, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Helldivers 2, Persona 3 Reload, and even Dragon Age: The Veilguard were all more highly-rated than Black Myth: Wukong.
If we stand back and try to figure out exactly why Black Myth: Wukong made the list, the fact that it smashed records on Steam when it launched probably has a lot to do with it. It’s a pretty good game, which I even admit in my review, but it’s massive commercial success has undoubtedly played a part in it grabbing top spot. Sales aren’t a metric for quality though, as that would mean Resident Evil 5 is the best in the series, and we both know that isn’t true.
Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.
