The Veilguard Fans Feel Companions Don't Really Like Rook

Despite all of Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s success, longtime fans are pretty disappointed with the interpersonal relationships between Rook and their companions. What was considered a major pillar of the previous games in the series has thoroughly disappointed fans due to the sheer lack of depth in the writing.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Like Having A Party Full Of Wylls

Companions like Wyll work because they’re surrounded by selfish and more spiteful people, but The Veilguard never seems to grasp that.

Players feel like Rook is more of a therapist to their companions, as they’re always listening to their problems. Also, the romances feel very shallow as they were missing a spark. Overall, the dialogue writing has just been disappointing. However, some players have noted that this lack of interpersonal relationships makes it feel like none of the companions really like Rook.

Everybody Hates Rook

Over on Reddit, players have been discussing how the rest of the companions don’t seem like they particularly like Rook. Sure, they joined them on a quest to save the land, but it doesn’t look like they are friends. In fact, at times, it appears as though companions are actively avoiding Rook or being mean to them.

“Everyone asks ‘where is Rook?’, but no one ever asks ‘how is Rook?’ said one of the comments. To which another replied, “They all just wait around for Rook to show up and mediate their mundane disputes over whether pie or cake is the best and meme around planning picnics and sleepovers until Rook gets them all to sit at the library table and says ‘ok team we have to go try to stop the gods again.'”

I love the game. I’m replaying it now. But it’s still super apparent that it’s like one big family and this random other person named Rook,” noted another, conveying that Rook feels like an uninvited guest in the Lighthouse.

Some players also pointed to one moment in the game where Lucanis and Rook go shopping and Rook watches him buy gifts for everyone else. Kind of a slap in the face, considering Rook doesn’t get a gift and has to watch Lucanis buy everyone else one.

Fans pointed out that it seemed like the writers were so busy focussing on companions and their relationships with each other, that they completely forgot to include Rook into the mix. No one asks them any questions or even approaches them on their own. It’s always Rook who goes around hoping that someone wants to chat.
