Survivor is Reportedly Worse on PS5 Pro

Key Takeaways

  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor seems to perform worse on PS5 Pro, with flickering textures and lighting issues.
  • EA previously released a list of the many technical improvements the game would see on the new console.
  • Other games like Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 Remake have also seen technical issues on the PS5 Pro.

One of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s main selling points is how it enhances existing PS5 games, but it looks like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor might perform worse with the new hardware. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was one of the first titles to confirm that it was getting an upgrade on the PS5 Pro, which was officially announced during a livestream in September before being released on November 7.

A great many PlayStation 5 games were updated for the PS5 Pro upon its release, including last year’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Publisher EA released a list of the many technical improvements that the PS5 Pro would bring to Cal Kestis’s latest interactive adventure, such as higher base resolutions in both Performance Mode and Quality Mode. The latter upscales Jedi: Survivor’s resolution from 1800p to 2160p, maintaining 4K resolution and raytraced elements in the process. Meanwhile, Performance Mode bumps the game’s graphics from 1200p to 1800p while ensuring things still run smoothly at 60 FPS.

Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi has stuck to its neatly packaged release formula and yet the “final chapter” should endeavor to continue the journey.

While this all sounds promising on paper, the engineers at Digital Foundry are finding that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor runs worse on the PlayStation 5 Pro. In its latest YouTube video, Digital Foundry’s team ran through all of Jedi: Survivor’s different modes and graphical settings, finding themselves underwhelmed at the PS5 Pro’s supposed enhancements. In Performance Mode, the textures on in-game elements like foliage appear to flicker and strobe, making the game look unstable. This seems to be due to the PS5 Pro’s new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, which uses AI to upscale a game’s graphics.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Performance Seems to Falter on PS5 Pro

This effect doesn’t seem as bad in artificial environments like Jedi: Survivor’s opening section on Coruscant, but there are still minor aliasing issues and graphical instability. Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie also noted that Jedi: Survivor looks somewhat sharper and more detailed on PS5 Pro, at least in motion. Meanwhile, Quality mode suffers from lighting pop-up and even missing lighting details. All the same image issues in Performance mode are retained, though they aren’t as egregious.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor isn’t the first game to suffer a supposed downgrade on PS5 Pro, as titles like Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 Remake are reporting similar technical issues with the new hardware. Perhaps the issues befalling Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS5 Pro will be addressed in a future update patch, but so far it isn’t a good sign for a console that has already garnered a fair amount of skepticism and controversy due to its high entry price.
