It looks as though it’s the end of the road for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, as production is reportedly being wound up to make way for the next generation of Blackwell GPUs. If this latest rumor is to be believed, then RTX 4070 production will stop before the end of 2024, and is already being slowed down.
We’re expecting Nvidia to launch its new RTX 5000 range of graphics cards at the CES tradeshow in January 2025, and it’s now looking as though the RTX 5070 will be a part of the launch lineup, even if it ends up being released a few weeks later than the RTX 5090. If Nvidia is indeed winding up production of the RTX 4070, that would suggest the RTX 5070 is waiting in the wings.
This latest rumor follows earlier leaks that the RTX 4060 is being discontinued, and comes from the same source, which is the BoardChannels forums in China (requires a login). In a translation of the post on Videocardz, and in further discussion on Japanese tech blog Gazlog, it looks very much as though both the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super are reaching the end of the line.
According to the post, supply of these GPUs “was reduced in Q3 2024 (July to September), but is expected to decrease further in Q4 (October to December), with shipments scheduled to end by the end of December.” The post also adds that the very last shipments of the cards will be “around January 2025,” warning that “supply will not be very high.”
Most of the rest of Nvidia’s Ada gaming GPU lineup is already in its swansong as well, if this information is correct. The RTX 4070 Ti Super is reportedly “expected to be cleared in November,” which would explain why some companies are trying to clear stock, as we saw in this MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super deal recently.
Meanwhile, stock of the RTX 4090 is already running dry, with the GPU being increasingly hard to find in stock, and the post on BoardChannels warns that “most brands of graphics card manufacturers only have tail goods” of the RTX 4080 Super, “which can be cleared within November, and there may be no goods to sell in December.” Basically, don’t ask for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 graphics card for Christmas; you’re better off waiting for the new GPUs, which are expected to arrive in January 2025.
If this rumor is true, then it shows Nvidia taking a very different strategy with the Blackwell launch than it did with Ada. When the RTX 4000 series was first released, there was still abundant stock of many Ampere RTX 3000 GPUs in most stores, muddying the market, especially when the prices of the RTX 4000 series were initially so high. This time, though, it looks as though Nvidia is clearing as much RTX 4000 inventory as possible, so the new RTX 5000 series has a clean run ahead of it.
