Dynasty Warriors Origins release date, trailer, and news

When is the Dynasty Warriors Origins release date? Since the PlayStation 2 era, Dynasty Warriors has focused on two key concepts: having more playable characters than a typical fighting game, and battering through thousands of enemies. The newest entry in this long-running series focuses on a single protagonist, but they’re still slaying tons of foes at once on their journey through the alt-history of the Three Kingdoms conflict.

While we don’t yet know how this nameless hero affects the story in Koei Tecmo’s action game, we’ll get to make key decisions that affect the war. In Dynasty Warriors Origins, you may discover the consequences of pursuing Lu Bu at Hulao Gate and preventing Guan Yu from reuniting with Liu Bei. Perhaps you’ll even determine the new Emperor of China. Whatever awaits, here’s what we know about the Dynasty Warriors Origins release date so far.

Dynasty Warriors Origins release date

The Dynasty Warriors Origins release date is Friday, January 17, 2025. This was confirmed by Koei Tecmo in the official release date which aired during Sony’s State of Play.

Dynasty Warriors Origins will be available on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

We expected the hack and slash game to arrive in the first half of 2025 thanks to Koei Tecmo’s usual release cadence. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series, and both Nioh games all fall into this release window.

Dynasty Warriors Origins trailers

So far we’ve had two proper Dynasty Warriors Origins trailers – an overview trailer that aired during September 2024’s Sony State of Play event, and its initial announcement trailer that dropped back in May.

The most recent overview trailer gives us glimpses of the legendary officers we’ll be able to fight alongside in the battle against the Yellow Turbans. The trailer also showcases the combat prowess of our sometimes-playable companion officer, which appears in a few sequential quick cuts. From what we can see, they can wield greatswords and spears, or opt for a more hands-on approach.

There are plenty of combat mechanics on display, too. We can see the protagonist riding into battle on horseback at points, and Koei Tecmo’s implemented a stylish dodge system that will let you bypass attacks with a time-slowing flourish.

The announcement trailer, meanwhile, begins with hints of the events that led to the War of the Three Kingdoms: the people starving due to a corrupt ruling family sitting on the throne and the Yellow Turban Rebellion erupting in the provinces.

We then see our nameless protagonist order troops to fire arrows before getting his hands dirty by slashing away with his spear, pummelling an enemy with his fists, and running over hordes of foes while on horseback. So far it seems to be a typical Dynasty Warriors affair, though the camera angles are more dynamic. The war game also has a more orchestral score, which sounds great, though we will miss the power metal from previous installments.

Dynasty Warriors Origins news

State of Play’s gameplay overview trailer was accompanied by a PlayStation blog post that dives into Origins’ officers. In battle, you’ll either fight alone or alongside them, making for god-tier Musou action. You’ll also have a companion officer who permanently fights by your side, and can become playable “if certain conditions are met during battle.”

The blog also tells us a bit more about the protagonist’s role in the Three Kingdoms, stating you’ll have to make “various choices” on your journey. Our protagonist is also harboring a secret that will impact the story – cryptic. Finally, we get a glimpse of Orgins’ continental map that provides a 3D overview of China as you move from battlefield to battlefield. This is a fabulous way to give a sense of place, and looks to really tie each arena together.

A PlayStation blog post also accompanied the Dynasty Warriors Origins announcement trailer. It provides confirmation from director Tomohiko Sho that the game will be from the perspective of a new character and will return to the “1 vs. 1,000 gameplay.” This directly refers to the game shift of Dynasty Warriors 9, which felt more like an open-world RPG and was not as well received by fans.

That is everything we know about Dynasty Warriors Origins so far, but if you’re a fan of games set in key moments of history, you should consider giving some of the best strategy games a shot. Alternatively, there are plenty of upcoming PC games in 2024 and beyond to keep you busy during the wait for the Dynasty Warriors Origins release date.
