How to Check Relationship Status and Approval in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it’s possible to check how companion relationship are progressing beyond pop-up messages of ‘Neve Approves.’ Here’s how.
Featuring seven romanceable companion characters, players have a great set of options spanning the game’s main factions (as well as one returning Inquisition character). Lucanis, the Antivan Crows’ representative on the team, is a slow-burn romance with progression tied to both the companion’s story arc and the main Veilguard story. There are several ways to get locked out of a romance with Lucanis, so it can be a little tricky to complete the romance — especially at one critical point in the game’s story. This guide details how to romance the Veilguard’s resident Antivan Crow abomination.
Spoiler Warning: This guide will go into some early, mid, and late-game story details, as well as offer some details about important side quest choices and dialogue choices.
Treviso Must Be Saved
The Lucanis romance is not possible if Rook decides to save Minrathous during an early game quest. Saving Treviso is necessary to romance Lucanis. If Minrathous is chosen instead, Lucanis will break off any existing flirtation, and Rook will not be able to engage further in the romance. This is in addition to the other consequences of saving Minrathous instead of Treviso.
Build Approval With Lucanis
The first step to the Lucanis romance is building approval with the companion. Companions can approve or disapprove of specific actions taken by the player in the game world, but unless every single action taken results in disapproval, those individual decisions won’t matter too much — especially because companions gain approval and increase their bond with the player based on completing content as part of the party as well. So, players looking to romance Lucanis (but who don’t necessarily say or do things he approves of) should keep him around in the party, assuming they have space/need for an assassin-type rogue.
Lucanis likes direct and no-nonsense dialogue options and will often approve of Rook deciding to support the Crows in dialogue, or dialogue options that support Lucanis himself.
Lucanis will Greatly Approve:
- Saving Treviso
- Punching the First Warden
Conversely, Lucanis will Greatly Disapprove:
- Saving Minrathous
- Talking the First Warden down
Buy Lucanis A Gift
There are two opportunities to buy Lucanis a gift. One is during his first companion quest, where he is shopping for gifts for the other companions. Rook can buy Lucanis a small memento, and he will be pleased. The second opportunity is to purchase a special companion Gift, which is available from the Antivan Crow Faction Merchant (assuming the merchant still exists).
If the merchant has died, the gift may become available later in the Crossroads region thanks to a special later-game merchant.
Flirt At Every Opportunity
Flirting with a character using the Flirt dialogue option (heart symbol) is a great way to establish romantic interest, even though it may not seem like it’s progressing the romance at first. For Lucanis, the beginning of the romance chain happens during the companion/story quest, Sea of Blood. After the resolution of the quest, Rook can select a Flirt dialogue option that will open up Lucanis to a romance with Rook. The later companion quest, Coffee with the Crows, will also start a non-exclusive romance path with Lucanis.

Complete Lucanis’ Companion Quests
As with all the other companions, Lucanis will only progress the romance if certain options are chosen during his companion quests. In general, players are free to choose how to respond to Lucanis, but there are several key conversations where specific Flirt dialogues must be chosen, or the romance will end. Two of these are part of companion/story quests, and one comes after, during a special Lighthouse dialogue related to a quest.
As certain quests and conversation options are tied to the main story quest and other companion quest progression, it can feel like not much is happening, but the romance is not bugged — it just happens relatively slowly.
For completionist players who like to complete a lot of story
and can’t-miss side content in
The Veilguard
before moving on to the next phase of the game, there will be long stretches of play where the romance seems to be stalled, but the romance will continue once the right conditions are met.
Bloodbath Quest Dialogue Choices
The Bloodbath quest is a main story/companion quest. For this to function as Lucanis’ companion quest — with the possibility of romance — Treviso must have been saved. During this quest, Lucanis will tear through Treviso seeking revenge for the death of his grandmother, Caterina Dellamorte. After the resolution of this quest, Lucanis and Rook will begin a conversation at the Lighthouse.
If Lucanis has been flirted with previously, there will be an option to continue or end the romance.
The ”
I like messes” dialogue option will allow further flirtation
and romance progression, whereas the option
“Maybe you’re right” will cut off any future romance progression.
Inner Demons Quest/Post-Quest Lighthouse Dialogue Choices
Inner Demons will only become available after Rook receives the Restless Spirits and Walking the Graves companion quests from Emmrich, and Emmrich and Lucanis have had a discussion about Zara at the Lighthouse.
During the Inner Demons companion quest, Rook will have several opportunities to Flirt with Lucanis. In this quest, Rook must journey inside Lucanis’ mind to help him make a decision on how to move forward in his life. The first Flirt opportunity comes when Rook meets Lucanis in his mind, and the second comes after the quest returns to the real world. These choices don’t block or commit to any romance progression, but a later choice after the quest ends does.
When speaking to Lucanis after Inner Demons, players must choose the “I don’t mind” Flirt dialogue option. This option commits to an exclusive romance with Lucanis.
The final companion quest for Lucanis,
A Murder of Crows
, does not impact romance progression, although there will be a chance to flirt.

The Lucanis Romance is a Very Slow-Burn
After Inner Demons, it may seem like that’s it for the romance, but it isn’t. Although there aren’t any more specific moments required for progression, the final romance scene involving Lucanis happens much later than the relationship commitment. Keep playing, and it will happen — although likely much later than expected.
