Avengers: Doomsday was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, confirming Marvel Studios was abandoning the Kang Dynasty movie. The fifth Avengers movie was going to center on Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror until Marvel Studios fired the actor shortly after he was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment. Instead of recasting Kang, Marvel Studios decided to scrap the character and cast former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, the new main antagonist for Avengers 5.

Official Avengers: Doomsday plot details haven’t been announced, but fans expect to see multiple pairings between fan-favorite MCU characters as they assemble to defeat Doctor Doom. The Cosmic Circus‘ Alex Perez teased one such pairing, noting that there’s “credence” to the rumors claiming Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will team up with Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. According to Perez, Wanda will team up with Doctor Doom in an attempt to undo her actions while using the Darkhold:
I’m going to let you in on a pairing I’ve heard rumored for a while now, and it’s made its way already on social media, but there is credence to the rumor of the Scarlet Witch being paired up with Doctor Doom for Doomsday. But I do want to clarify that this isn’t some weird marriage scenario like it in the comics. Wanda’s goal will be to try and undo the mistakes she made whilst using the Darkhold. This is going to be all about her redemption arc.
Scarlet Witch’s quest for redemption began with WandaVision, in which she placed a Hex on the small town of Westview that turned into a sitcom world and created her children, Billy and Tommy. Although Wanda eventually breaks the Hex, freeing the citizens of Westview but erasing her children from existence, she obtains a magical book called The Darkhold that begins to corrupt her. When Scarlet Witch returns in Doctor Strange 2, she attempts to steal the powers of America Chavez, a teenager with the ability to travel across the multiverse. While Scarlet Witch understandably wants to use these powers to find a universe where her children still exist, she ends up murdering several people to do so before realizing the error of her ways and destroying every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse in a final sacrificial act.
So, the Scarlet Witch has a lot to atone for. While Marvel Studios seemingly tried to place some of the blame for her actions on the corrupting influence of the Darkhold, many fans felt the Doctor Strange 2 writers made Scarlet Witch beyond redemption. It’s difficult for some to imagine her standing with the Avengers after she brutally killed so many people in Doctor Strange 2.
On the other hand, Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to reboot the MCU, effectively resetting the continuity. If true, what better way to redeem Scarlet Witch than by making it so that she never killed anyone to begin with? Teaming up with Doctor Doom to do so may raise new problems for her, but fans must wait to see if any of these Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars rumors are true before passing judgment.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against Victor von Doom – played by the returning Robert DOwney Jr. Avengers 5 will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
