Chopper Needs a New Scary Form

Chopper Needs a New Scary Form

Key Takeaways

  • Pre-time skip Chopper was a monstrous beast
  • Chopper’s scary forms added depth to his character growth
  • A new monstrous form could offset Chopper’s cuteness

From his introduction toOne Piece, besides being the doctor of the Straw Hat crew, Chopper has always been the “cute appeal.” Being his small, yet aggressively adorable and naive, reindeer self, Chopper has captured the hearts of fans and characters in the show with his childlike sense of wonder and love of sweets. Even the Strawhat Crew, who know Chopper the best, treat him like an adorable little brother.

However, Chopper wasn’t always just the cute icon of the Straw Hats. In fact, earlier during his introduction, Chopper wasn’t adorable all the time. His battle points often transformed him into an uncomfortable-looking beast, rather than the cute form he started as. Despite how they once looked, in modernOne Piece, even Chopper’s scariest forms have received an adorable overhaul. Chopper’s scary forms provided an important layer to his character growth. A new terrifying form for Chopper in One Piecemay be a way to add more depth to a character that’s been lacking in recent memory.

Pre-time Skip Chopper Was a Monstrous Beast

Monster Point Was Terrifying

Chopper, from the beginning of his story, has always struggled with his appearance. Often considering himself a monster, Chopper has one of the saddest backstories in One Piece, and never felt at home with either reindeer or humans, leaving him lonely and giving him a hatred of humanity. Despite this, the Straw Hat Crew would eventually meet Chopper, giving him a place to belong, and allowing him to feel comfortable leaving his home during the Drum Island Arc to start his adventure to find a means to cure every disease inOne Piece.

Chopper, beforeOne Piece’sStraw Hats, considered his hybrid forms of his Human-Human Fruit to be completely horrific. Being in his more humanoid form led to him being shot and severely injured by humans mistaking him for a monster. However, after Luffy finds Chopper, rather than considering him to be a monster, he finds each of Chopper’s forms as cool and perfect for battle. Ever since that moment, Chopper has owned up to his monstrous forms, accepting who he is.

This idea culminates with the reveal of Chopper’s Monster Point duringOne Piece’sEnies Lobby Arc. After consuming too many Rumble Balls, Chopper loses all control, becoming an incredibly strong, yet terrifying beast. Attacking friend and foe alike and releasing a blood-curdling scream, Chopper’s monster point feels like the character losing himself to his monstrous side.

From Monster to Mascot

Ever since the time skip, Chopper has lost this level of his character. Now, with each form being adorable and perfectly controlled, it feels like the audience is missing Chopper’s monstrous side. Now, with most of his Points being adorable, Chopper feels more like a one-note character, rather than the multi-leveled beast he was. This is especially apparent with Chopper and the Human-Human Fruit’s Monster Point, which he now has complete control over.

Though Zoro does mention during Fishman Island that Chopper’s Strong Point is even more monstrous than before, he rarely uses this form and more often opts to use his much cuter, Kung Fu Point instead. Although the new cuter forms are a direct result of Chopper’s research and newfound comfortability with his monstrous side, it still removes the complexity that the character had before One Piece’s time skip. However, it isn’t too late to save Chopper’s character, as a new form could be just what he needs.

A Form to Surpass Monster Point

One Piece Chopper Monster Point

While it wouldn’t be a wise move to haveOne Piece’scutest crew member relapse back into his original despair, adding a new terrifying, monstrous form for Chopper to utilize would solve a few problems the character faces. Firstly, it would replace Monster Point as the form that gives into his beast side, giving the Straw Hat’s doctor a risky, yet effective form. Additionally, it would give the character a much-needed power-up. Though Monster Point is alreadyincredibly strong, having another move in his repertoire, maybe something akin to a Sulong Form of the Minx, would be a wise choice.

If I can help my crew, I want to become a real monster!

In the end, Chopper, ever since the beginning ofOne Piece’stime skip, Chopper has been lacking in character development. Rather than focusing on the complexity of the character before, he feels more cute, without the substance he had before. Hopefully, before the end of the series, Chopper will become more than just the doctor and pet of the Straw Hat Crew.
