While the Transformers franchise has featured many villains over its extensive run, none of them are as iconic or memorable as Megatron. The polar opposite of Optimus Prime, Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons and a warmongering tyrant who wishes to see Cybertron, and later Earth, bow before him. There have been many different incarnations of the character across the TV shows and movies, each with unique attributes.

Transformers One Scores At Least One Victory For Fans of the Franchise
The success of Transformers One has Hasbro looking at what made it successful so it be repeated.
Depending on the overall tone of the show or movie they were in, a version of Megatron could either be intimidating and able to strike fear or a more lighthearted and comically exaggerated villainous figure. However, one fact that remained constant across all of his appearances is that he is one of the strongest transformers and a dangerous opponent to all his enemies. Still, when pitted against each other, some Megatrons are stronger than their counterparts.
8 Generation 1 Megatron
A Classic Villain Who Rarely Gets The Upper Hand
G1 Megatron is an undeniable classic. He is the first version of the character to ever be put on screen and an inspiration for all others. As the leader of the Decepticons, he is the main villain in the first seasons, but due to the lighthearted nature of the show, he is far from threatening or even competent, often shown failing.
Despite showing some prowess in Transformers: The Movie, Megatron is mostly shown losing to Optimus Prime, who triumphs in their battles, forcing Megatron to retreat. He is also often upstaged by treacherous followers like Starscream, who can backstab him continuously and get away with it.
7 Bayverse Megatron
A Disgraced Tyrant
Megatron’s iteration from Michael Bay’s movies is notably inconsistent in terms of power levels. His introduction in Transformers is a very powerful one, however, as Megatron is shown to be a strong warrior who can match Optimus Prime and easily destroy other Autobots when he comes face to face with them.
However, in all later movies, Megatron was reduced to a secondary villain, if not an outright underling. In Revenge of the Fallen, he is easily beaten by Optimus and can only gain an advantage by striking from behind, while in Dark of the Moon, he is obliterated in seconds, quicker than his Decepticon lieutenants.
6 Beast Wars Megatron
Adaptable Warrior
Beast Wars put a unique spin on Megatron. He retains some more comical elements, sometimes even advancing them, but takes on a differing form. As a tyrannosaurus, Megatron represents the top food chain in the animal kingdom across the prehistoric Earth, and he is fierce enough to back this status up.
He is among the stronger transformers and has earned his rightful place as the leader of the Predacons. He survived near-death experience multiple times and always came back stronger, eventually evolving into his final dragon form. It is only through teamwork and bright mind that Maximals can defeat him.
5 War For Cybertron Megatron
A Resilient Leader
The Cybertron games presented Megatron before he found earth. He is a playable character in the Decepticon campaign and an enemy to battle in the Autobot campaign. Armed with a cannon and able to transform into a Cybertronian tank, this Megatron is ruthless and powerful in his approach.

Highest-Grossing Transformers Movies, Ranked
The Transformers franchise has been a staple of cinema for over a decade thanks to Michael Bay and the exploits of Optimus Prime.
He is a younger version of the character and is, therefore, more brash and aggressive, more than willing to charge head-first into the battle and expose himself. His strength and resilience compensate for this, which allowed Megatron to defeat both Zeta Prime and Omega Supreme, making him a worthy opponent for Optimus.
4 Unicron Trilogy Megatron
A Strong Survivor
Unicron Trilogy Megatron blends traditional villainous qualities from his classic versions with his newly developed menacing side. Armada Megatron behaves like a strict military general and easily keeps his underlings in fear of him. Even without minicons, he is able to go toe-to-toe with Optimus Prime.
In Cybertron, Megatron can fight the overlords of different planets and defeat Starscream when he is at his most powerful. Despite taking much damage, he always survives and grows stronger, particularly after becoming Galvatron. A remarkable warrior, Megatron remains a consistent threat throughout the story.
3 Transformers One Megatron
A Promising Fighter
Transformers One shows Megatron’s early life when he was still a regular miner with no power or aspirations. The movie details his transformation into a vengeful leader who vows for control of Cybertron, but his fighting skills are fully displayed throughout the movie. Considering this is the start of Megatron’s journey, his skills are highly impressive.
He manages to fight sentinel’s underlings and later Sentinel himself. Megatron becoming the killer of the treacherous Prime solidifies him as a historical figure. Even more notably, he can defeat Starscream, the leader of the High Guard in a duel in a matter of seconds, which shows the extreme potential Megatron has.
2 Transformers Animated Megatron
A Menacing Powerhouse
Transformers Animated Megatron leans into the direction of being menacing and terrifying. He barely shows any emotions, instead being cold and calculating like one would expect from a robot. This makes him feel like a persistent threat, even when his body is restricted to a mere head locked in a laboratory.

Transformers One shows that not having humans in the middle of the fight makes the war between the robots that much more interesting.
In terms of power level, he starts off as a powerhouse who can easily defeat Optimus Prime. In fact, Optimus is so insignificant to Megatron that he doesn’t bother to call him by his name, instead demeaning him as a mere ‘Autobot’. It takes a long time before the two can become equals and face off on fair terms.
1 Transformers Prime Megatron
Triumphed Over Optimus Prime
Transformers Prime is widely known as one of the best Transformers shows in history, and much of this is due to its captivating portrayal of characters. Megatron is no exception, as he brings back the villainous energy present in G1 Megatron while adding a very dark and menacing twist. This Megatron is ruthless, as shown multiple times in the story.
He is incredibly strong and can face off against multiple Autobots, including Optimus Prime, at once. He is able to defeat any other transformer he engages in a duel, and he came close to killing Optimus Prime multiple times. Out of all versions of Megatron, the one from Transformers Prime is the strongest and the most formidable.
