All New Content in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

The new content in DQIII Remake can be split into three categories: Quality of Life (QoL), Story Content, and new Gameplay Elements.

Quality of Life Content:

Not every piece of new content must be ‘found’ in order to use it. The new QoL content in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is incredibly helpful, and includes the following:

  • Ability to Increase Battle Speed
  • Autosave
  • Autobattle
  • Ability to use Zoom from inside buildings & dungeons.
  • Fully restore HP & MP when leveling up
  • Enter towns from multiple directions

New Story Content:

The new story content in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is largely based around expanding Ortega’s (the Hero’s father) backstory. When you visit the locations tied to Ortega, or locations where Ortega previously visited, you will be treated to several new fully-voiced cutscenes. We will explore the exact locations below.

New Gameplay Elements & Items

There are several new items and pieces of gear in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, but the biggest pieces of new gameplay content by far are the Monster Arena and Monster Wrangler vocation. While there was technically a Monster Arena in the original, the new arena is completely overhauled. We will examine where to find the Monster Arenas below, along with how to use the new Monster Wrangler vocation.

Where to Find Monster Arena and Monster Wrangler in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

Monster Wrangler Vocation:

The Monster Wrangler is a brand-new vocation in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. This class is incredibly powerful, and works in conjunction with the monsters you recruit in the overworld. And while every vocation can recruit at least some monsters from the field, the Monster Wrangler can automatically recruit every monster you encounter. As you collect more and more monsters, the wrangler will unlock powerful new abilities that target every enemy in an encounter.

Players can add a Monster Wrangler to their party as soon as they have access to Patty’s Party Planning Place. Returning players who know DQIII‘s systems well should be able to use them with no issues. New players may want to wait until they learn the combat mechanics and level up their Hero. Old and new players alike will find a lot to like about the new vocation, and should both consider adding them to their party.

Monster Arena:

The first Monster Arena in Dragon Quest 3 Remake can be found in Romaria. Later you will find Monster Arenas in three other towns and cities. The list includes:

  • Romaria – Rank 1 & 2
  • Ibis Rank 3 & 4
  • Manoza Rank 5 & 6
  • Cantlin Rank 7 & 8

You cannot compete in a higher rank Monster Arena until you have completed all the ranks below .

See the maps for the exact locations. When looking at a map, or the fast-travel list, you’ll know a town has a Monster Arena when you see the icon that features a slime with two swords crossed behind it.

Over the course of Dragon Quest 3 Remake, players will be following in the footsteps of Ortega, the main protagonist’s father. And while Ortega’s mission – and it’s ambiguous result – loom large over the original release, the developers clearly saw his journey as a prime place to expand the game’s story. As such, there are multiple locations where new cutscenes and vocal performances have been added to provide more insight into Ortega’s adventure.

Ortega’s Story Locations:

Mur: There are several locations that trigger new cutscenes in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. The most important takes place in Mur, a small town in the frozen tundras found on the central-eastern edge of the western continent. Once in town, head to the eastern side of the Item/Weapon Shop and you’ll see a large opening you can enter. Once inside, you’ll see an old man with an exclamation point over his head. Speak to him to begin the cutscene.

If you follow this section through, you will acquire Ortega’s Helm, which is the first step in acquiring the Auroral Helm, one of the new items in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

Shrine of the Dwarf:

If you head north up the coast from Mur, you’ll find the Shrine of the Dwarf. Here, the dwarf in residence will recount his past with Ortega, and hint at the method of fixing Ortega’s Helm.

Alefgard: When you first drop into Alefgard, you’ll automatically get a new cutscene regarding what happened to Ortega after his encounter with the Garboyle at the Maw of the Necrogond.

Rimuldar: Visit the island town of Rimuldar in Alefgard and visit the Inn. You do not want to go in the front door, but the semi-hidden back entrance. There, you will find a chest that contains Ortega’s diary, and his thoughts on what he remembers about his wife and child.

  • ‘Secret Spots’ – look for odd-looking locations in the overworld, locations that stand out in some way. These will often be Secret Spots. These locations will include treasure, Mini-Medals, and sometimes friendly monsters.
