The Girl Who Changed Everything

When Meruem first meets Komugi, she is a frail, blind, and weak person who does not seem to have any voice or place in his world of dominance and power. At first, he presumes that her only possible worth is to amuse him for his recently found distraction, perhaps just a moment of amusement in the game of Gungi. However, Meruem is shocked to find himself struggling against her, a being of his supreme intellect being beaten back and unable to defeat her. Komugi unknowingly uses Nen when she plays Gungi, allowing her to greatly improve her abilities with every match.

Her talent was cultivated through years of dedication, passion for the game, and the unwillingness to become a burden, staking the possibility of committing suicide on every game she plays. For Mereum, who sees his power as absolute, her unique skill in the game disrupts his idea, and he is suddenly faced with the notion that his view of what power is may be flawed. As he loses, Mereum is unsettled by Komugi’s modest confidence and devotion to the game, which calls into question the superiority he had always believed in. Unlike his guards, who tremble with respect and a sense of mission, and the hordes of humans, who tremble with fear, Komugi does not seem intimidated and treats him throughout the game as an opponent rather than a terrifying conqueror.

This act of Komugi sets her to Meruem as an interesting person and not just a competitor. Soon enough, she becomes someone he respects greatly and decides it is time for him to learn her name. Komugi’s calm presence and lack of fear pose a puzzle Meruem can not solve with raw strength or intellect, forcing him to confront his limits in ways he never thought possible.

His Understanding Of Human Feelings

As Meruem’s fascination and respect for Komugi deepens, so does the internal conflict he faces. His conviction till now followed a clear-cut belief: the strong exist to dominate the weak, a conviction woven into his very identity as the King of the Chimera ants, but with Komugi, whose vulnerability and strong dedication to Gungi, shakes his foundations in those beliefs.

Meruem’s transformation is far from simple as he grapples with the discomfort of the foreign feelings of care for someone he once saw as very much beneath him. His growing care for Komugi challenges his understanding of strength, wondering if caring for another could signify weakness, he decides to remove her permanently from his life and finds himself protecting her from harm when a giant bird attacks her. This episode cemented their increasing affection. She serves as a mirror for him, revealing previously unknown aspects of himself. He exhibits empathy, sympathy, and possibly even the earliest stages of love, becoming more human than monstrous.

The Depth of Komugi’s Influence

Komgi Played A Huge Part In Meruem’s Development

As his bond with Komugi deepens, Meruem’s perspective on his mission unexpectedly shifts. Once motivated by his unquenchable desire for power, the King starts to feel empty in contrast to his bond with her. Komugi becomes an anchor for him, providing him with a reason for being that outweighs any desire for conquest, a sense of fulfillment that opens his eyes to a world centered on compassion and connection rather than dominion.

In his final moments, Meruem’s transformation reaches its peak. The King who has been poisoned decides to seek Komugi, facing his certain mortality, desires to have a conversation with Gungi before he dies, knowing that spending too much time with her could lead to her death as the poison is contagious, he tells her that it would be time to leave, placing her well-being over his showing a sense of selflessness that his time around Komugi has awakened in him, she refuses his request and asks him to remain, choosing to die with him, both placing companionship above survival.

When Mereum starts to go blind during their last game, he calls out to her, and she continues to reassure him that she is with him and will not leave. The Ank King asks her to call him by name one last time, and she mutters, “Goodnight, Meruem. I’ll be joining you soon.” What started as a game of curiosity, through Komugi, who embodies resilience and love for the game, highlights the unique qualities of humanity, giving Meruem a new pair of lenses on life. The game, like Komugi, teaches Mereum humility, reminding him that certain things cannot be owned or conquered but must instead be appreciated.
