The show’s star, Oscar Isaac, had made it very clear in multiple interviews that he would love to return to play the character. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Isaac revealed that they did have conversations with Marvel Studios about making a second season.
Isaac admitted: “There have been some specific conversations. They were pleasant. The spilling of the details is that there’s no details. We don’t know [if there will be a second season], but we’re talking about it.” The actor then went on to add that he could return as Moon Knight in the MCU, “whether that’s in a group thing or maybe a great idea comes around for a season two or if it’s a standalone film or whatever it could be.”
So, it’s clear for all to see that Isaac would love to come back, but it sounds as though he’s not too concerned whether it’s in a second season of the show or as part of a bigger MCU movie. All Isaac wants to do is play Moon Knight again. Lockley is one of Moon Knight’s more interesting personas. In the comic books, he’s a cab driver who gathers information while on the job, which is pretty clever. It seemed as though fans were going to get to see more of Marc Spector’s other personas, and they would have been forced to work together, which would have been fun to watch.
That said, it does seem as though the door is still open for Isaac’s return as the character in another MCU project – possibly in a Midnight Sons movie. The show ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, and it seems as though fans are never going to see what the character gets up to next in the MCU. It also opened up the Marvel Universe to a more mystical and mythological realm, which was unique compared to the rest of the MCU. One could argue that the Doctor Strange movies, WandaVision, and Agatha All Along could satisfy those looking for more mystical and magical content in the MCU.
No more mythology in the MCU…?
Moon Knight offered something different from those other magical MCU shows and movies. It delved into Egyptian mythology and explored split personality disorder, which isn’t discussed at all outside of Moon Knight in the MCU. Marc Spector is a fascinating character, as is the Heliopolitan god of the moon and vengeance known as Khonshu. Moon Knight is Khonshu’s “servant” (for lack of a better term), and their dynamic is fun to watch on screen.
All this is to say that Moon Knight Season 2 looks to be as dead as the dodo, which is not good news for Marvel fans or the future of the MCU. Marvel Studios really needs to start backing some of these shows and characters; otherwise, they run the risk of alienating their hordes of fans and viewers. It’s a careful balancing act, and Marvel is in danger of falling off the tightrope.
