Fallout 4 Mod Adds Popular Feature From New Vegas

Fallout 4 Mod Adds Popular Feature From New Vegas

Key Takeaways

  • A new mod replicates New Vegas’ reputation system in Fallout 4, altering player interactions with factions.
  • The Reputations mod adds faction-specific rewards to Fallout 4.
  • The modder has made many other Fallout 4 mods in the past.

One ambitious Fallout 4 modder has borrowed the reputation system from Fallout: New Vegas and applied it to The Commonwealth region of the post-apocalyptic world. Fallout 4 is already one of the most popular games for modders to fiddle around with, and this mod changes the way that the game’s various factions can interact with the player based on their previous actions and choices.

While the Fallout series has had players interacting with various factions since the launch of its first game in 1997, Fallout: New Vegas stands out by providing what many feel is one of the best faction systems in gaming. Early on, players are tasked with a choice that will vilify them to either the residents of Goodsprings or the Powder Gangers, while becoming a hero to the opposing faction. The game’s reputation system keeps track of more than a dozen different factions at four tiers, with each faction having unique reactions to the player that range from providing them with gear or access to special areas to attacking them on sight or sending squads of assassins after them.

Fallout 4 introduced player settlements to the series, bringing new ways to interact with the world. But some locations are a mistake.

Popular Fallout modder bp42s is now bringing a similar reputation system to Fallout 4. The Reputations mod, which was uploaded to the creator’s Nexus Mods page on November 16, has been in the works for about a year. The creator had originally shared a short demo of it on their YouTube page in December 2023, displaying just two of Fallout 4’s factions in a special reputation screen added to the player’s Pip-Boy. One of the most dynamic changes caused by this mod is that accruing too many negative points with a faction can cause them to start sending hit squads after the player, much like the New California Republic or Caesar’s Legion did in Fallout: New Vegas. Hit squads operate on a cooldown timer, and the only ways to get them to stop coming are to make peace with the faction dispatching them or to eliminate that faction entirely.

Modder Brings New Vegas’ Reputation System to Fallout 4

There are also rewards for building positive reputations in Fallout 4, which range from major factions like the Brotherhood of Steel and the Railroad to settlement-based factions like Diamond City. Reaching higher tiers on the reputation scale may cause a faction to send out a representative to provide the player with faction-specific gifts or leave supply crates for them. At the Idolized tier, players can even pick up powerful perks, though those perks go away if their reputation with the faction decreases.

This is far from the creator’s first dive into modding. Their Nexus Mods page shows a total of 54 Fallout 4 mods uploaded over the past two years, with nearly 1.8 million downloads between them. These mods cover a variety of topics to either increase or decrease the game’s difficulty, such as letting players in Fallout 4 Survival Mode save at any body of water and making it incredibly difficult to sneak while piloting Power Armor.
