Why Halo Potentially Shifting To Third-Person Won't Happen Overnight

The Halo franchise has been a staple first-person franchise in the industry, but a recent update to Halo Infinite marks a first for the long-running series. This month, Halo Infinite introduced the first official third-person option in the series, marking a new milestone for Halo. While such a drastic change of form was divisive when it was first announced, many have ultimately been enjoying the new perspective option.

Speculation about a third-person option coming to Halo has been buzzing through the community for a long time. However, when 343 Industries officially confirmed a third-person mode for Halo Infinite last month, many were surprised that the mode was finally becoming an official part of the game. Now that Halo has its first ever third-person perspective, it now leaves the door wide open for a future installment to feature this viewpoint from the start. Although a third-person Halo game now seems far more likely, this may not be as sudden of a change as some may be expecting.

The Halo Franchise May Take a Slow Approach to Introducing Third-Person as a Normal Feature

Changing the Series’ Staple Perspective Entirely Seems Unlikely

Until now, Halo has been solely a first-person experience. This may be the first time that third-person has been officially represented in the series, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been on the wish list of many players. There have been numerous third-person Halo mods through the years, and it seems as though 343 Industries finally took note of this section of the community who were interested in such an option. The introduction of the new perspective hasn’t been completely smooth sailing, though. There are some within the fan base who consider Halo‘s first-person viewpoint an essential piece of the franchise, and steering away from that completely could prove to be far too risky.

Taking a More Balanced Approach to Different Perspectives

Despite the criticism from some, there are plenty of players who have loved third-person in Halo Infinite. On the Halo subreddit, many have been vocal about how playing in this mode can be even more beneficial thanks to a broader field of view. If enough players express their appreciation for a third-person view, it’s likely that 343 Industries will continue to add the option in future games. However, the most effective way may be to simply offer the choice to switch between one or the other. As Halo continues to evolve, adding more player choices seems possible.

As of now, third-person cannot be used across all modes;
Halo Infinite
‘s PvE Firefight is the first to feature it. It is unclear if third-person will come to PvP.

Instead of keeping one static camera perspective, giving players a choice of which viewpoint they play from could offer the best of both worlds. The history of Halo has been drenched in first-person action, but branching out to a new perspective may be the next logical step for the franchise to enter a new era. Given the popularity of modern third-person shooters like Fortnite and Helldivers 2, it may be wise for Halo to take a little inspiration from these titles.

Halo Infinite Setting the Stage For a More Third-Person Friendly Franchise

343 Industries Has Yet to Announce More Third-Person

Since third-person perspective is currently limited, there are questions arising about whether Halo Infinite will eventually get a third-person campaign mode or not. At the time of this writing, there is nothing confirmed by 343 Industries. If any campaign mode is likely to get a third-person option, it may not be until the next Halo game. Halo Infinite could merely be the testing ground for the future of the franchise.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently stated that
Halo
could eventually find a home on other platforms.

As one of Xbox’s biggest franchises, it will be fascinating to see how such an iconic series chooses to evolve into its next phase. More third-person options feel incredibly probable, but the possibility of a Halo game that is entirely third-person may happen much further down the road, if at all.
