When a videogame series has so many mainline entries and spinoffs, it can be difficult to choose where to start. Numbered Final Fantasy games are all separate, so they’re easy enough to recommend, but tackling a decades-old series can be a daunting task. This is where the brand new Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake comes in, as not only is it the start of an incredible trilogy, but it’s also a beloved RPG. Now, 36 years after the original DQ3 launched, a new Square Enix remake is here and soaring on Steam.
Every single time I see a Square Enix RPG with the HD-2D style, I adore the visuals more. Each game that blends old-school character sprites and polygonal environments oozes delightful detail, and this Dragon Quest 3 remake is no exception. Square Enix has already made Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and the Live A Live remake in the HD-2D style, and I’m here for whatever else the studio has planned.
In typical JRPG fashion, in Dragon Quest 3 you’ve got to form a party, travel the land, and engage in an array of battles with some truly eclectic fantasy creatures. Just like the aforementioned Live A Live remake, this reimagining of Dragon Quest 3 is an old-school game at heart.
Even though it just came out the Dragon Quest 3 remake is already doing incredibly well on Steam, having already reached a staggering peak of 43,642 players. We’ve got a lot of the weekend ahead of us too, so I’d wager that this peak is going to rise even higher over the next couple of days. With the sheer number of JRPGs increasing by the second, this new and improved version of Dragon Quest 3 is the way to go if you want to experience some videogame history.
If you’re worried about waiting for the in-development remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 before playing this reimagining of the third game, don’t be. Dragon Quest 3 is actually a prequel to the first two games – no other spoilers here – so Square Enix is giving you more than enough time to get all the story setup you need before the 1 and 2 remakes come out in 2025.
The Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is available right now for $59.99 / £49.99. You can find it here.
