Observer is a cult classic, and deserves more recognition.

Masahiro Ito’s expertly designed creatures are terrifying enough as James makes his way through Silent Hill while trying to find his wife, but they become even more interesting once it’s revealed that James has been sucked into the town after murdering Mary. This makes it clear that the monsters are manifestations of James’ guilt and feelings toward his late wife, providing a lot of context for their horrific designs.

Every Monster In Silent Hill 2 (Except Pyramid Head) Is Female

Masahiro Ito confirming that Silent Hill 2's monsters are all female.

Silent Hill 2’s creepy creatures being created by James and his damaged psyche is something that’s been known and discussed by fans for a long time, but it seems that there are still a lot of layers that haven’t been outright confirmed. One such detail was shared by Silent Hill 2’s art director, Masahiro Ito, over on Bluesky earlier this week.

In the months since Silent Hill 2’s remake released, Ito has been answering questions from fans and revealing previously unknown things about the intent behind the game’s characters and creatures, such as the Pyramid Head painting actually being real. Ito randomly decided to drop another bombshell on fans by confirming that all of the monsters in the game, aside from Pyramid Head, are female.

Oh, before I forget, all creatures in Silent Hill 2 except Pyramid Head are female since they are James’ projections of Mary. – Masahiro Ito

Ito explains that Silent Hill 2’s creatures are all female because they’re actually James’ projections of Mary. This is a little obvious with some of the enemies, such as the overtly sexual nurses and long-legged mannequins, but it’s a little more surprising when it comes to the mandarins and some of the game’s bosses. I’ll never look at those weird leg mouths the same…

Fans have theorised for some time that each of the monsters are meant to represent a different part of James’ feelings towards Mary, but we now know for certain that also applies to their gender. If it wasn’t already clear that James Sunderland has a lot of repressed issues, it certainly is now.
