Key Takeaways
- The PS5 Pro is selling as well as the PS4 Pro, despite the $700 price tag.
- Scalpers, however, are reportedly losing money on the PS5 Pro.
- Enhanced games like Horizon Forbidden West show major graphics and performance improvements on PS5 Pro.
Recent reports indicate that the PS5 Pro is selling as much as the PS4 Pro in its early days. Considering the high price of the PS5 Pro, this seems like a big win for Sony’s mid-gen upgrade.
Announced earlier this year, the PS5 Pro was released on November 7. This new PS5 is capable of running games at high resolutions while maintaining a high frame rate, and it comes with an upgraded GPU which is 45% faster than the normal PS5. However, the console has a hefty price tag of $700 and does not come with a disc drive, which many gamers saw as a reason to skip the mid-gen device.

Now, early reports indicate that the PS5 Pro is selling just as well as the PS4 Pro, which was originally released in 2016. As reported by Gematsu, the PS5 Pro sold around 13,000 units more than the PS4 Pro at launch in Japan. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella also revealed that the new console sold “units in the same ballpark as the PS4 Pro’s launch,” in the United States, indicating a similar degree of success. The PS4 Pro cost only $400 during launch, when compared to $700 for the PS5 Pro, so it’s somewhat surprising to see it faring so well. Reports indicate that the PS4 Pro sold 14.3 million units, so it’s possible that the PS5 Pro’s sales will remain in the same ballpark as the previous gen device. However, Sony has not officially revealed the PS5 Pro sales numbers yet.
PS5 Pro Is Selling Around the Same Amount of Units as the PS4 Pro
Despite the good sales, however, scalpers are reportedly losing money on the PS5 Pro. Last week, it was reported that several scalpers in the United Kingdom were selling the console below the base price of £700, indicating an abundance of PS5 Pro consoles for sale.
Several games had enhanced PS5 Pro versions at launch. The list includes some popular titles such as Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and others.
Most of the titles with enhanced features have far better graphics and performance when compared to their normal PS5 performance. Games that did not receive a PS5 Pro patch, however, are only slightly improved. One example of a game that saw major improvements after the update was the popular Baldur’s Gate 3. Playing split-screen co-op in Baldur’s Gate 3 is much better with PS5 Pro, as gamers can achieve high resolutions and 60 FPS without issues.
