How To Avoid Random Encounters In Dragon Quest 3 Remake

The main method for avoiding random encounters is by using a Holy Water. While active, Holy Water will ward off all random encounters from weaker enemies, letting you explore freely without any battles as long as your party is at a higher level than the monsters of that region.

Another option is the skill Padfoot, learned by the Thief Vocation at level 17. This ability lowers the overall encounter rate for 128 steps even if the monsters are at the same level or higher level than the party. This ability also only works when traveling in the overworld.

While not stated in the item’s description, this item also only works in the overworld and does not lower the encounter rate within a dungeon no matter the difference in level. It can make getting to a new location much easier if you haven’t already discovered the location.

If you have discovered a location, you can fast-travel there
using a Chimera Wing
or by casting Zoom.

The duration of Holy Water is also based on steps taken, so no need to rush around after activating one. Holy Water can be purchased at the general shop in just about every town in the game.

  • General shops have the wing icon on the map.
  • Holy Water cost 20 gold.

Especially when you are about to go to a previous region of the game, it is highly recommended to stock up on Holy Water. These items are only used outside of combat, so there’s no use in giving them to a specific party member and taking up their inventory slots. Holy Water can be used at any time by going to your inventory and selecting the item, with only one being active at a time and a new one needing to be used to continue the effects once it wears off.
