Black Ops 6 Double XP Token Removal Explained By Treyarch

Game Pass Brought Me Back To Call of Duty, And I Love It

Key Takeaways

  • Black Ops 6’s Season 01 allowed players to cash in stored Double XP tokens from Modern Warfare 2 and 3, though the feature was quickly removed.
  • Following fan backlash, Treyarch has issued a statement in response to the inadvertent addition followed by the intentional removal.
  • Treyarch confirmed it is working on a way to implement the tokens in a future update, while also noting the Warzone workaround is still usable.

When Season 01 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 kicked off this week, fans were elated for multiple reasons. First, it brought some new maps into the game’s multiplayer mode, along with promises for more content down the line, including weapons and operator skins. But most importantly, it somehow made Double XP tokens collected from Modern Warfare 3 and Modern Warfare 2 appear in the game.

Fans immediately took notice, with many beginning to cash in the tokens they had been holding on to. However, as it turns out, it was an inadvertent addition, and the feature was removed shortly after. Naturally, that move was met with backlash from fans.

Now, Treyarch has stepped forward to explain what happened and how it is remedying things.

We’re Sorry, Seriously

In a statement posted to Twitter, Treyarch acknowledged the ability to use legacy tokens in Black Ops 6, but noted that it posed a potential risk to the game’s overall stability. That’s why a patch was necessitated.

However, the tokens will return, and the studio is actively “testing a way to implement this change correctly in a future update.” The end goal is to ensure stability before rolling it out. That said, the Warzone workaround, where a player activates a token in the mode and then switches back to multiplayer, still works, per the tweet.

In other words, the fan backlash actually paid off. Given that current Call of Duty titles all share the same launcher, it didn’t make much sense as to why those tokens couldn’t be carried over, aside from wanting players to progress slower. Now, it appears the tokens will be here to stay.
