Key Takeaways
- World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary event area is now a sanctuary, preventing PvP combat.
- Players can now activate War Mode for a 10% experience bonus on event quests in Tanaris.
- Combining experience boosts during the anniversary event can give up to 75% extra experience.
The World of Warcraft 20th anniversary event venue outside the Caverns of Time in Tanaris is now classified as a sanctuary. This means world PvP is now impossible in the area and, more importantly, World of Warcraft players can cash in on an extra 10% experience from event quests by activating War Mode.
World of Warcraft is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary with an in-game event that runs until January 6. The festivities take place outside the Caverns of Time in the deserts of Tanaris, where an expansive fairground has been set up full of activities, rewards, and quests for both factions. Despite this, the area was not previously flagged as a sanctuary, meaning Alliance and Horde players who were flagged for PvP could kill one another, though doing so would incur the wrath of the Bronze Dragonflight guards.

WoW 20th Anniversary Event: All Celebration Crate Locations
There are a series of very well hidden Celebration Crates as part of the 20th Anniversary event in World of Warcraft, and they are not easy to find.
However, Blizzard has fixed this particular oversight. In a recent hotfix, the 20th anniversary event venue has officially been classified as a sanctuary. Players with War Mode active in World of Warcraft can no longer gank characters as they travel about the grounds, and must leave the area in order to kill others flagged for PvP.
WoW 20th Anniversary Event Area is Now a Sanctuary
The most important part of this change is that fans can now safely benefit from the War Mode experience bonus while in the 20th anniversary event grounds. Flagging oneself for PvP in Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Valdrakken, or Dornogal grants a passive 10% bonus to experience from kills and quests in the open world, including those from the Anniversary event. When combined with other boosts available during WoW‘s 20th anniversary event, players can easily get 55% extra experience during the entire celebration, and up to 75% if combined with other conditional buffs.
Experience Bonuses Available in WoW During Anniversary Event
- 10% – WoW anniversary event buff
- 10% – 12-hour buff from Celebrate Good Fun quest
- 25% – Having up to five characters at level 80 (5% for each)
- 10% – War Mode
- 10% – Darkmoon Faire (from December 1-7 and January 5-11)
- 10% – Draught of Ten Lands (only works under level 50)
The daily trivia quest, A Time to Reflect, given by Historian Llore for Alliance or Historian Ju’pa for Horde, is an incredibly easy way to passively gain experience and level up in WoW. For answering a simple lore question, each character can earn around 10-15% of a level. The War Mode experience bonus adds around 3,000 extra experience for characters between levels 70 and 80, which adds up fast.
Of course, fans will need to be careful when leaving the 20th anniversary venue in War Mode if they don’t want to engage in PvP. They will also need to check if groups they join for activities like the World of Warcraft 20th anniversary world bosses are in War Mode, as they won’t be able to join the same phases across the toggle. Luckily, War Mode can be deactivated in any rest area, including the central tent of the event grounds.
