I’ve been very lucky with Pokemon TCG Pocket so far. Well, at least, judging by the expressions of a few friends and colleagues, they are definitely jealous of my majestic pulling power. Just this morning, I pulled a Mewtwo ex and a Cubone full art, while yesterday saw me open a booster pack containing both a Venusaur ex and a full art Giovanni trainer card. I have what it takes to be the very best, and I want to share that talent with everyone I can.
When it comes to opening booster packs, I have a ritual. A specific process which is definitely giving me an edge and not absolute nonsense. So, if you would, please indulge me.
Why Turning Around Your Booster Packs Is So Important
After picking one of the three themed packs to open, give the swirling circle of packs a little spin. Then, close your eyes and pick one off the carousel at random. This pack is calling out to you, and no doubt hiding a rare card needed to complete your collection. But don’t be too hasty, opening this pack right away will spell certain doom.
Instead, turn that baby around so it’s facing backwards, so you can’t see the art and are instead faced with the seal and the space where a barcode should be. Now you’re free to open it right up.. This adds an extra aura of mystery to proceedings, and we know that having no idea what’s going on brings you some more luck.
More seriously though, I think this strategy adds an extra layer of thrills to opening packs. It is an exercise themed around surprise, the act of crossing your fingers and hoping you won’t be greeted with five bland and basic duplicates, but shinies, foils, and full arts. Seeing every card one by one by flipping past them with reckless abandon is all well and good, but giving them a flip makes it so much more fun.
Pokemon TCG Pocket Is Bringing Back My Childhood Rituals
When I used to play Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire as a kid, I developed a similar ritual when trying to catch rare Pokemon. Obviously, the game isn’t paying attention to any of this and is going to determine whether a monster is going to be caught or escape depending on balls you’re using, the amount of health they have left, and myriad other factors. But I was above all of that, choosing to close my eyes, holding the A button and hoping the Pokemon was mine the second I opened them.
I think this urban legend was passed down to me by my older brother, who promised it was a serious mechanic and not just wishful thinking manifesting itself into nothingness. But given I was an impressionable little gamer, I ran with it and still think about it whenever I play games in the series today. To see this spirit live on in TCG Pocket brings a smile to my face and makes the game more fun. Turning my booster packs around as I reveal my cards with an added layer of secrecy doesn’t influence the end result, but I like to feel like it does.
