There’s a new DLSS for your Nvidia GeForce gaming GPU, here’s what it does



The latest version of Nvidia DLSS has just been shrunk, simplifying the process of enabling the resolution scaling feature for GeForce graphics cards. The new release, called DLSS 3.8.10, eliminates four presets in favor of two streamlined options that combine all the features.

Nvidia DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) has been key to Nvidia’s success with its recent graphics cards, requiring an Nvidia GPU with Tensor cores to function, and offering superior image quality to AMD FSR. In our tests, it can massively improve the frame rates in games that support it, and the latest versions even improve the eye candy, as we saw in DLSS 3.5 on Cyberpunk 2077, which uses Nvidia’s ray reconstruction t3ech.

Bundled with the latest GeForce drivers (566.14), it was noticed on Reddit that the file size had been slashed. While most players won’t notice any differences, as a lot of what’s changed is found under the hood.

To see what presets you’re using, you’ll need to use a program such as DLSSTweaks, or another method, to activate the DLSS developer menus. Newer games will use these updated presets when they ship with the necessary files, but titles that don’t update will need to be manually modded.

3.8.10 removes presets dubbed A, B, C, and D, which it has instead combined these into presets E and F, which handle each setting available in-game. Rather than A handling Performance, Balanced and Quality, but with a focus on reducing ghosting in motion, and C and D also working in the same space but working to handle frame information, this has all been merged into E.

Preset F now handles Ultra Performance mode, rather than B, as well as DLAA, the company’s anti-aliasing layer. There’s a mysterious Preset G too, but it’s unused, with not much information outside a few reports last year that it would be used exclusively in Unreal Engine 5.

Even the best graphics card models available today need some assistance from resolution upscaling. Most recently, the Stalker 2 system requirements have come under fire for hiding that the game only hits the target frame rates with upscaling enabled. Likewise, in official benchmarks for the new AMD’s Ryzen 9 HX 370 APU, almost all the eye-popping results were backed by FSR, the company’s GPU-agnostic alternative to DLSS.
