Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Bellara Romance Guide

There are seven romance options available for gamers to pursue in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. For those unsure, here’s how to romance Bellara.

A common trend in Bioware games, like the previous Dragon Age games as well as the entire Mass Effect series, is that the relationships between the player character — in this case, Rook — and their companions develop depending on the choices made. While the game does a great job of showing increases or decreases in companion approval through pop-up messages like Bellara Approves, Neve Approves, or Lucanis Greatly Approves, it only gives a general overview of the moment-to-moment effects your dialogue choices are having on your companions. Luckily, there is a way to check how each companion feels about you in detail. Here’s how.

How to Check Companion Bond Level in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Companion Bond/Relationship is displayed on the left side of the companion selection screen. To navigate here, open your inventory and tab over the ‘Companions’ section on the top bar. Select the companion whose bond you want to check and click their name. Their current relationship status will show up on the left edge of the screen, just below their name, class, and background.

The number inside the circle represents the Relationship/Bond level this companion has with you, and the circle around it is a meter. Every time you make a choice that your companion likes, and you see a pop-up notification like ‘Harding Approves,’ a little bit of this meter fills up. When the circle is complete, the number in the center ticks up, and you get to the next Relationship level.

What is the Maximum Relationship Level

The maximum Relationship level in DAV is 10, and it is possible to max out the relationship with all companions in the game. Here are the main ways to increase companion approval:

  • Completing companion quests.
  • Completing main and side quests while in a party with the companion.
  • Choosing the right dialogue options in cutscenes.

Swapping around companions is a great habit to get into to ensure nobody gets left behind.

What is Hero of the Veilguard

If you hover over the symbol above the companion’s name in their character selection screen, you’ll see a blurb about the ‘Hero of the Veilguard’ status. To put it simply, Hero of the Veilguard is a reward for fully completing a companion’s questline and resolving their inner turmoil.

It is not limited to one character; all companions can get the ‘Hero of the Veilguard’ status as long as you complete their associated quests before the game ends. It is crucial to do so in order to get the best ending.

Beyond the numerical value of the Bond level of a companion, you can gauge how a companion feels about Rook and how they fit into the team by checking their approval status. Just below the Relationship level, you’ll see a small symbol followed by text. Consider it a general descriptor for how that companion is feeling right at that moment in the story, representing how good (or bad) their current relationship with Rook is. This gets automatically updated as you experience more things with the companion, go through key events in the story, or get involved with them in a romantic sense.

This is also where you can check if you’re locked into a Romance with a companion or not. One heart symbol means the companion is willing to enter an exclusive relationship with you. Two hearts on top of each other mean you’ve committed to this companion in a romantic relationship.
