It’s the almost-final-dungeon in Metaphor: ReFantazio, and we’ve got a guide to it. Here’s the Skybound Avatar.

Quite a few new quests and optional dungeons unlock during this time, including the Trials of the Dragon. Below, we’ll take a look at the Mad Mischief Trial of the Dragon, which has you returning to the Forsaken Tower in Oceanus to unlock a powerful reward.

How To Start The Trial Of The Dragon: Mad Mischief

The Trial of the Dragon: Mad Mischief quest starting, showing a brief description and difficulty level.

To start the Trial of the Dragon: Mad Mischief, speak to the Gabby Mustari near the Greatest Catch in Port Brilehaven, who will tell you about a secret, mysterious power hidden within the tower that is yours to take, if you’re able to complete its challenge.

When you’re ready, set out for the Forsaken Tower from the Gauntlet Runner.

Return To The Forsaken Tower

The layout of this dungeon is identical to the first time you explored it during the Superior Scrimshaw Bounty earlier in the game. However, there will be new enemies roaming around that are much higher level.

We recommend being at least level 65 before you attempt this quest, but the higher the better, as the final boss is level 70 and can be quite difficult.

As for new enemies, you’ll mainly have to worry about Sword Scourge Malmorta Undead, and Bloodcoin Imitec Mimics. The Undead are weak to Strike and Light attacks, while the Mimics are weak to Light. Bringing along the Protagonist’s Prince, Savior, or really any Archetype with Light magic inherited will help you clear your way through the tower.

Overall, the dungeon crawling portion of this quest is fairly standard; it’s the threat at the top of the tower you’ll need to be prepared for.

Battle Strategy

The Devourer of Nations is powerful, and with the ability to attack upwards of nine times in a row, you’ll need to take each turn carefully. The center of this strategy is Heismay; specifically, his high agility combined with the Royal Thief’s Rank 20 passive, Noble Thief’s Soul. This passive will deplete all enemy Turn Icons when Heismay dodges an attack.

By debuffing the boss’s agility using the Royal Thief’s Adamant Nightblade, and buffing the party’s agility through Masukukaja, you can greatly increase your party’s chances to dodge. Inheriting the Fire Dodge passive from the Merchant can also help your whole team.

The other party members should focus on buffing attack and defense, and healing up when necessary. This fight is largely one of attrition, so always err on the side of caution when considering whether to heal or not.

You’ll likely need to bring along some MP potions, or make sure your MP-heavy spenders are using the Wizard’s Shield Blessing passive to restore MP throughout the fight.

The boss will always begin its turn with Great Dragon’s Wrath, increasing its attack by three stages, if it doesn’t already have this buff. This means that if you spend a turn to remove this buff, the boss will always use its first turn to reapply it.

The main ability to watch out for is Great Dragon Shriek, which grants the boss six additional Turn Icons. Even at full health and maxed-out buffs, expect to take quite a bit of damage when the boss uses this ability. This is where the Noble Thief’s Soul comes in handy, as it can remove all of these extra Turn Icons by dodging just once with Heismay.

Overall, as long as you stay healed up, apply your buffs before they fall off, and keep the boss debuffed, you’ll eventually take it down.

Quest Rewards

Defeating the Devourer of Nations and completing this quest will reward you with experience, Archetype experience, MAG, reeve, and the Cardinal Dragon Raiment, which has the special effect of granting five Strength and Magic, and nullifying Fire.
