Key Takeaways
- The Democracy Space Station has been killing friendly squads with its constant bombardment.
- Arrowhead has provided a temporary solution, more lives and more shields.
- Democracy lives on.
Helldivers 2‘s Democracy Space Station (DSS), a triumph of Super Earth engineering that required several major orders to be fulfilled to expedite its construction, has not been going down well with players. The DSS was intended to provide air support to helldivers fighting on the planet beneath where it was stationed. While the DSS is certainly raining down devastation onto the surfaces of these planets, the problem is… it’s too effective.
Unfortunately, the hellfire being shot forth from the DSS is destroying terminids, automatons and helldivers alike. In this case, the power of democracy is not distinguishing between friend and foe. Players haven’t been satisfied with the performance of the DSS, feeling like it’s more of a hindrance than a help. There have even been full team wipes reported as a result of the DSS’s relentless orbital bombing. In hindsight, considering how often helldivers blow each other up, the constant bombardment was never going to be the safest support option.
Tactical Augmentation
Arrowhead Studios has heard the pleas of its players and is providing some temporary bonuses to players to try and alleviate some of the DSS’s shortcomings. The developer’s post reads, “Temporary DSS Augmentation. High Command has authorised augmentations to Helldivers loadouts while the Planetary Bombardment Tactical Action is active, in order to ameliorate an unexpectedly steep increase in heroic sacrifices. This is a temporary change, while a full assessment of the optimal number of sacrifices is underway. Consult the DSS Interface on your Galactic Map for more details.”
In practical terms, these augmentations are a +1 life increase per squad member, and all loadouts now include the FX-12 Shield Generator Relay stratagem. If the new “weapon of mass liberation” accidentally hits you with a devastating volley of bombs, at least you’ll be able to cower under a shield or, in the worst-case scenario, a new helldiver will be on standby to replace you.
The DSS is an interesting addition to Helldivers 2, and the community’s ability to vote on where it should be stationed is a nice touch that adds to player involvement in the galactic war. Sure, it’s currently destroying squads around the galaxy, but who knows how useful the DSS could be with a few tweaks.
