Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

It’s no secret that a movie titled Deadpool & Wolverine is going to feature Wolverine as a leading character. Yet, what fans might not expect, is an abundance of Wolverines in a multiverse-hopping montage. Deadpool & Wolverine is a lot of fun, and it’s an MCU movie that isn’t afraid to be its R-rated self and provides plenty of bloody violence and foul language: perfect for Wolverine.

As fans jump into the latest MCU outing, they can expect more than one Wolverine to pop up. Yet, those who are unfamiliar with the comics might want to learn more about what Wolverine variants show up in Deadpool & Wolverine so that they can better understand the exciting cameo choices.

9 Logan

Hugh Jackman’s Swan Song Returns As An Adamantium Corpse

• Featured in: Logan (2017)

Despite Ryan Reynolds assuring fans that they wouldn’t touch Logan (2017), it’s safe to say that he verbally and physically lied, for he does more than just touch Logan. He desecrates and defiles his corpse. The beginning of the film is a stark reminder that nothing is off limits with Deadpool, as Wade Wilson begins to dig up the grave of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine who died at the end of Logan (2017), complete with the scenic nature of North Dakota and the X that marks his grave as an X-Man.

Whilst this cameo isn’t one that talks, it is one of importance, as this Wolverine was the anchor of Wade’s universe, and in death, his universe will slowly deteriorate over thousands of years. The Logan seen here is just an adamantium skeleton with some rotten flesh, with the tree that impaled him still in his chest.

8 Comic-Accurate Short-King Wolverine

One of the first Wolverines seen in the montage is Hugh Jackman, but this time, it’s more comic-accurate. As fans of the character might know, Wolverine is actually 5’3, and Hugh Jackman stands at a tall 6’2. The almost foot difference between the two might showcase a few inaccuracies in height, but in looks, mannerisms, and biceps, they are practically the same, which is why it’s hilarious and surprising to see a short king version of Wolverine.

Whilst this comic-accurate version of Wolverine is played for comedic effect, he certainly looks even smaller than 5’3, and perhaps it’s a meta-joke on how people over the years have said they want a shorter Wolverine compared to what they have with Hugh Jackman.

A One-Handed Wolverine

• Featured in: X-Men: Alpha #1 (December, 1994)

A wild hairdo and mutton chops greet Deadpool when he enters yet another universe in search of a Wolverine. This time, Deadpool finds himself on Earth-295, facing off against a rageful Wolverine amidst a dystopian future where humanity has been culled, and this world’s Wolverine, Weapon Omega, was its cause.

This is a Wolverine that features in the comics as more feral and deadly in nature and uses the Weapon X alias over Wolverine. First appearing in 1994’s X-Men: Alpha, this Wolverine would have his left hand replaced by adamantium in a battle against Cyclops, showcasing the dark future that awaits a potential Logan.

6 Patch

One Of Wolverine’s Eyepatch-Wearing Disguises

• Featured in: Marvel Comics Presents #10 (September, 1988)

Deadpool finds himself in a casino, where he comes face to face with another Wolverine variant (also, of course, played by Hugh Jackman). This variant wears a white suit with a black bowtie and has a striking eyepatch over his left eye. Even Deadpool seems to know who he is, as he immediately says hello by referring to this Wolverine as Patch.

In the comics, Patch is one of Wolverine’s hidden identities which he uses to infiltrate criminal circles whilst working as a vigilante in Madripoor. It’s a fun throwback to the 80s and another cool look for Hugh Jackman to have to showcase Wolverine’s cool adventures in the comics.

5 Old Man Logan

A Different Side To Old Man Logan

• Featured in: Wolverine #66 (June, 2008)

Old Man Logan was one of the more interesting stories of Marvel Comics, and it was brought to the pages by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. It’s clear as day that this is Old Man Logan, thanks to the rugged and leathery skin, the hat, and the secluded cabin in the forest that shows a Wolverine who is finished with the violence and the need for his claws.

A Logan that seems straight out of the Old West, it’s clear that this is a Logan from a distant future due to how he actually has a car in his yard and a shotgun that he happily uses to blast Deadpool away. Seeing a comic-accurate Old Man Logan could spell for a neat movie now that the X-Men have free reign of Hulk, Hawkeye, and many others.

4 Crucified Wolverine

A Wolverine Crucified On A Giant X Surrounded by Skulls

• Featured in: Uncanny X-Men #251 (July, 1989)

Dropping into another universe, Wolverine finds himself in a rainy location filled with bloodied skulls. Whilst the sight of an ocean of skulls is scary enough, he looks up to find Wolverine crucified on a giant yellow X. This is a classic nod to the Marc Silvestri comic cover for Uncanny X-Men #251, which depicts Wolverine in a tragedy.

It’s one of the most iconic Wolverine comic covers of all time. The cover even has some story implications inside Uncanny X-Men #251, where Wolverine is hung from a wooden X by the Reavers and is deeply haunted by hallucinations. Now the last thing he needs is a Deadpool looking in on that hallucination.

3 Classic John Byrne Brown and Tan Wolverine

A Beloved Classic Color Scheme Faces off Against the Hulk

• Featured in: Uncanny X-Men #139 (November, 1980)

Famed writer and artist John Byrne gets a name drop from Deadpool when he enters into another Wolverine’s world. This is the first variant audiences see with a comic-accurate costume, and it’s the classic yellow and brown outfit that was designed by John Byrne when he arrived on the X-Men scene back in the 80s.

Not only is it awesome to see Hugh Jackman in the classic brown-ochre Wolverine suit that was teased in a deleted end scene of The Wolverine (2013), but it’s also a Wolverine that gets to fight the Incredible Hulk. Even if fans don’t get to see the fight, it’s a brilliant homage to Wolverine’s first appearance.

2 Henry Cavill’s Wolverine

The DCEU’s Superman Becomes the Cavillrine

One of the most exciting cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine comes in the form of a tall and muscular actor, one that fans might not expect. For the first time in 24 years, Wolverine is played by another person in live-action, and of course, it’s none other than Henry Cavill. Cavill looks the part, and it’s great to see him again, and even Deadpool can’t help but make a sly joke at DC’s expense for how they treated the former Superman of the DCEU who received one solo movie and a bundle of post-credit teasers.

Henry Cavill’s voice and mannerisms as Wolverine are brief, but it’s clear that he is the right fit for the character, especially with his bulging biceps that he reloads to punch Deadpool back through a TVA time door. This Wolverine is so cool that he even breaks Disney’s ‘no smoking’ policy, as he can be seen with a cigar in his mouth.

1 The Worst Wolverine

A Wolverine That Let Down His Entire World, But Saved Another

Featured inThe main Wolverine for Deadpool & Wolverine is also known as the Worst Wolverine, a mutant who lets down his entire world. This version of Wolverine has an expansive backstory that expresses tragedy and regret and also explains his spiraling alcoholism. It’s a Wolverine that hates himself and can’t see himself as a hero for the things he has done.

Nevertheless, it’s the Wolverine that Deadpool is stuck with, and one that just might be able to redeem himself to prove that even if he is the wrong guy, he doesn’t have to be, and he can be the hero that the X-Men knew he could be for them and the world. Even better still, it’s the first time audiences get to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine wear the yellow and blue comic suit, complete with the cowl.
