The Different Meta Types in Overwatch 2 Explained
Team compositions define the meta in Overwatch 2, and there are around three comps that are consistently effective in the current state of the game.
Luckily, even solo players in Overwatch 2 can play into their team’s strengths – those who recognize the key Heroes in the following compositions can work around them and coordinate with their team to pull off some incredible plays.
Updated on November 15, 2024, by Amjad A. Asma: Blizzard dropped a new balance patch on November 12 that has micro-buffed multiple Heroes in an effort to make the gameplay a bit more fair. It also added a limited-time throwback event, Overwatch: Classic. It will be available until December 3, and brings in the classic 6v6 mode with the original 21 Heroes.
Speaking of competitive play once again, players have varied Overwatch 2 team compositions that they can try out if they’re struggling with ranking up. The meta is currently being ruled by long-distance Heroes, like Widowmaker and Sojourn. So, it’s important to keep the overall gameplay style in mind when making a team.
These Overwatch 2 team compositions have been crafted to broadly suit all ranks. Some Heroes have been skipped or not given as much attention, but they can still be good. Many complex factors like map geometry, opponents, and more strongly influence a match.
Top Poke Team
Great For Long-Range Combat

The main idea of a Poke team composition in Overwatch 2 is to get picks on the enemy team – it’s all about pressuring certain angles and limiting how the enemy can play. It works best on maps with long sight lines, such as Junkertown.
This is one of the best Poke team compositions in Overwatch 2, and offers more than a good chance of victory. Widowmaker, Sojourn, and Ana are ruling the meta because of their gameplay style and numbers. Sigma and Zenyatta fit well here, helping plug the small gaps left behind.
Widowmaker and Zenyatta can easily one-shot a non-Tank Hero across the map. Even if they don’t, they are severe deterrents to anyone flying solo. Zenyatta’s and Ana’s healing are top-notch at the moment and can rescue allies from even the most dangerous situations.
Sigma remains one of the most meta Poke Tanks in Overwatch 2. He deals a good level of damage, Kinetic Grasp heals a decent chunk, and his Ultimate is one to watch out for. With Zenyatta’s Orb of Harmony and his own overhealth, he’s essentially a wall in every match. When players pair Sigma’s Ultimate with Sojourn, they can easily get a teamwipe in almost every scenario.
All-Rounder Poke Team
Easier-To-Play Heroes, But Still Effective
Heroes in this Overwatch 2 team composition:
- Roadhog
- Ashe
- Cassidy
- Baptiste
- Kiriko
Roadhog is a top-tier Tank at the moment, and fits well in any Overwatch 2 meta team composition. His hook, shotgun, and Pig Pen are still diabolical, easily enabling him to cut down any non-Tank hero. His self-healing is also a big factor in survival.

Overwatch Classic’s Return is a Double-Edged Sword
With the highly anticipated Overwatch Classic mode set to launch on November 12, its return to Overwatch 2 may bring several benefits and challenges.
Ashe did face a bit of a nerf in September with respect to her damage (40 to 35 for primary fire), but she remains a strong Poke DPS in the current meta. Cassidy is much the same, and together they can hinder enemies and kill them, or knock them back and then finish them up. The two hit hard and hit fast, and are fairly easy to play even in low-tier lobbies. Plus, their Ultimates work well solo too, so teamwipe is easier than with Heroes like Orisa or Bastion.
Kiriko and Baptiste are great healers in the current Overwatch 2 meta, and are well-poised to aide damage as well as health. Moreover, Kiriko received major buffs on November 12, dropping Swift Step and Protection Suzu’s cooldown by one second. Kunai’s recovery rate has also dropped by 0.05s. Overall, she’s once again on the rise as someone who can teleport in and clear a couple of backline Heroes herself.
Fast And Furious Dive Team
Dive Team With Excellent Long-Range Talent
Dive Damage |
Dive Tank |
Dive Support |

Dive is one of the more flexible team compositions in Overwatch 2 . It is most effective on maps with some sort of high ground – the idea is to dive onto the enemy team on the high ground and force them onto the lower levels. However, Dive does require a lot of coordination to pull off. This team composition works best when players can locate a vulnerable target and go in higher numbers to quickly eliminate them.
Most meta team compositions in Overwatch 2 are currently leaning towards Poke, but Dive line-ups are still a threat. Their presence in lower-ranked lobbies is still on the higher side.
Doomfist is one of the best Dive Tanks in the game, and his recent buff on November 12 makes him even more of a threat. Aside from Doomfist’s Rocket Punch becoming more lethal, his Ultimate’s cost has been reduced by 8%, and he heals 90 HP/s instead of 75 while in the air.
Genji and Soldier 76 make a solid Overwatch 2 team combo, as effective for short-range brawls as for long-range pokes. Further, their Ultimates are some of the best in the game and usually take down about three enemies on their own. They really shine in a well-coordinated Dive team composition in Overwatch 2’s current meta. Further, Genji’s Deflect and Soldier 76’s Biotic Field easily increase survivability in any scenario.
When talking about the best Support Healers in Overwatch 2 for a Dive team, Brigitte and Juno clearly mark their territory. The former’s healing is top-notch at the moment, and she can easily create distances with her flail. The cost of Juno’s Orbital Ray Ultimate has increased by 10%, but it’s still impractically strong. Further, the two are quite agile and can easily dive in with the rest of the team in a concerted effort.
Risky But Effective Dive Team
Easily Hold Enemies From Progressing
All Heroes in this Overwatch 2 team composition:
- D.Va
- Junkrat
- Hanzo
- Ana
- Lifeweaver
Dive team compositions in Overwatch 2 can do quite well even when coming in off the back foot. D.Va is among the best Tanks for such purposes, and she’s pretty good even if she’s not the best right now. Her Defense Matrix and Boosters are crucial and come in clutch. The agility is incredibly helpful in hassling the backline and making a coordinated attack with the team.

Learning to play Hanzo effectively in Overwatch 2 can be a bit tricky, but he’s a powerful hero at all ranges. Clubbing Hanzo‘s agility and damage prowess with Junkrat’s makes for a team that’s incredibly challenging to face off against. Junkrat did get a one-second increase to his Concussion Mine, but he’s still a formidable DPS hero in any meta Overwatch 2 team composition.
Meanwhile, Lifeweaver is an excellent DPS healer for any Dive team. He has been buffed in a major way, which also makes him more of a beginner-friendly Support Healer. His Life Grip’s cooldown has been reduced by a second and now heals 15 more HP than earlier. Moreover, the overhealth from his Ultimate remains for six seconds instead of 2.5. Combining this overhealth with Ana‘s Nano-boosted DPS can turn the game around in a single move.
All-Out Brawl Team
Freely Take Up Close-Range Battles
Brawl Damage |
Brawl Tank |
Brawl Support |

Brawl is a team composition that relies on a heavy-hitting Tank, like Mauga. The Heroes here will often stick as a unit, proceeding to engage in combat for extended periods of time for time-consuming battles that require plenty of healing abilities, like lifesteal and armor capabilities. Brawl characters tend to have a way of healing themselves, as well as close-range abilities and weapons to keep the pressure on enemies and force them into a chaotic battle with only one team left standing.
Mauga is a great Tank, whether someone’s a veteran or a beginner. The ability to stand there and deal tremendous damage while giving AoE resistance and heals to allies is an easy sell. If players know how to play Reaper, they should pair Mauga up with his flanks, high-damage shotguns, and lifesteal. This way, they’ll have a combo with Reaper that can clear out teammates anytime.
Echo is shining in Overwatch 2‘s meta once again, and her agility is always helpful. She can easily protect the on-ground Heroes from flankers and deal superb damage in outright brawls. Her air support also means that she can better protect the backline from sneak attacks.

Overwatch 2: Best Ultimate Ability Combos
Overwatch 2’s list of ultimate abilities makes for some pretty deadly combinations, with the following dominating matches.
Kiriko’s Protection Suzu, Kunai, and teleport are incredibly handy here, especially when players are up against meta Overwatch 2 Support Heroes like Ana and Juno. The presence of the allied Ana here is self-explanatory, as pairing her with Mauga, or even Echo, can result in an incredible performance.
Utility-Based Brawl Team
High-End Team That Uses Utilities Effectively
All Heroes in this Overwatch 2 team composition:
- Orisa
- Cassidy
- Sojourn
- Juno
- Brigitte
Brawl team compositions in Overwatch 2 necessitate a lot of healing, but out-damaging and hindering gameplay usually triumph first. Here, the team has a lot of stuns and imbalancing utilities, and the healing’s pretty good as well.
Orisa did get nerfed a bit in October. Her Fortify doesn’t reduce Fusion Driver’s heat generation, and her Base Health went from 125 to 175 while Armor Health went from 350 to 300. However, she remains an elite Tank in most Overwatch 2 competitive team matches. Pairing her with Brigitte and Juno’s AoE and multi-heal can work wonders in any brawl fight. Plus, Brigitte’s flail and shield bash can come in clutch in crucial scenarios. Since Juno would be up in the air, players will be forced to divert their attention—they could be easily punished for this.
In a similar vein, Cassidy’s flashbang and Sojourn’s Disruptor Shot are very impactful, especially on flankers or the backline. The two are relatively easier to play as well in this Overwatch 2 team composition, and the damage they deal is usually enough to keep even strong enemies in check. Cassidy’s Ultimate’s cost was also reduced by 10% in September, so players can easily get it multiple times even if they’re not playing at an optimum level.
