Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Best Evoker Mage Build
If you want to build the best Evoker Mage in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, this guide can help.
So, if players want to create the strongest Death Caller, they should pay attention to this build. This guide includes valuable advice on the best Perks to select, the equipment that synergizes perfectly with its passive skills and traits, and the best combat strategy to outmaneuver even the most dangerous enemies.
Best Build For Death Caller In Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Death Callers are masters of Life and Death, and their fearsome spells cause Necrotic Damage and steal the Life Force of enemies, as well as generate buffs for the party as they decimate their foes. Necrotic damage is one of the best damage types in the game, since many enemies do not have resistance to this element (even the final Boss is weak to Necrotic damage) and it also pairs up nicely with Cold Damage thanks to certain Perks included in this build. To get things going, make sure to pick the following Perks from the Mage Skill Tree:
- From Core Mage: Mind Blast, Charging Spirit, and Mortal Concentration.
- From Control: Ability – Frost Noval, Bulwark, Fade Reflex, Providence, Ethereal, Zone of Destruction, Frostbite, and Frost Shield.
- From Mourn Watch: Deathfrost, Death’s Blessing, Imbued Duration, Enervation, Collateral Damage, Zone of Concentration, Ability-Corrupted Ground, Arcane Defiance, Even The Odds, Channeled Thoughts, Insidious Rot, Necessary Steps, Breathing Room, Time Management, Further Torment, Concentration, and Degrade.
- From Death Caller: Ultimate Ability – The Crypt’s Herald, Ability – Spirit Bomb, Death’s Blessing, Restless Spirits, Soulburn, Vitality, Mortalitasi, Desperation, Concentration, Death And Decay, Death Surge, Fade Conduit, Overdraw, and Invigorating Beam.
- From Sustain: Desolate Malady, Prolong, Return Fire, Providence, Resistant Blasts, Tear Down, Inner Focus, Velocity, Essence Eater, Deterioration, Imbued Reaction, Bulwark, and Staggering Charge.
- From Shadow Dragon: Spellbreaker, Light Armor Mastery, Meditation, Elemental Catalyst, Fade Conduit, Imbuet Takedown, Desolate Malady, Salt in the Wound, Multiplicity, Underestimated, and Keen Insight.
There’s a total of
66 Skill Points to distribute
, considering the base 49 Skill Points and an additional 17 from
Fen’Harel Altars
that are hidden throughout the World. Make sure to reach the maximum level and collect all the Fen’Harel Altars in order to make the most out of this build.
- Frost Nova: With “Apply Chilled on Hit” enchantment. Use this skill as an opening to create a control zone and Chill enemies. The perfect control spell to combine with Corrupted Ground, creating an AoE that also activates the Deathfrost passive and leeches life from enemies. Chilled opponents are slower and have fewer chances to get out of the Control Ability zone, which will guarantee they take even more damage from the combined Necrosis and Chilled afflictions.
- Corrupted Ground: Summons a big AoE that deals Necrotic Damage over time and applies Necrosis and Weakened to every enemy in the zone. Enchant it with +10% Life Leech to heal a percentage of the damage caused to all enemies. As mentioned before, the best combo move is with Frost Nova, since the combination of the two effects is lethal.
- Spirit Bomb: Enchanted with -15% Cooldown Duration. This powerful spell drains the life force of the enemies in front of the Death Caller, paralyzing them and causing Stagger, then detonating into a blast that pushes them away.
- The Crypt’s Herald – Ultimate: This Ultimate is one of the most broken skills in the game, since Necrotic Damage overcomes resistances, and it causes damage on two instances. First, it creates an AoE that slowly drains enemy energy, and then, it bursts into an explosion of Necrotic Damage. While Rook casts this spell, they becomes invulnerable (akin to a Super Armor effect) and cannot be interrupted.
Necrosis
: Causes damage over time and overcomes Barrier. It is highly effective
against Bosses like High Dragons
and powerful enemies like Pillars, Antaam, and Pride Demons.

- Precious Decay (Ring): +15% Necrotic Damage, +25% Necrotic Resistance, +20% Necrotic Ability Damage vs. Health (Red Bar), and 50% of all other damage Types (Including Physical Damage from the weapons) are turned into Necrotic Damage Bonus. This ring is the finishing touch of the best Death Caller build, with a lot of potential damage increases. Enchant with +25% Area Ability Damage.
All the enchantments and bonuses from this gear will synergize perfectly with the Death Caller’s build, granting empowered abilities, Necrotic Damage, and augmenting the number of Necrosis Affliction DoT that can be applied to the enemies. The best part of it is that there’s little room for mistakes with the Death Caller’s combos, since they’re not overly complex like the Spellblade ones, or are not so dependent on strategic positioning like the Evoker’s.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – How To Get Mass Effect Armor
Here’s how players can get this armor set that references another beloved BioWare franchise.
Best Strategy For Death Caller In Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Death Caller specializes in dealing AoE damage and targeting enemies to cause Debuff-empowered Necrotic damage, as well as to generate Afflictions that deal damage over time. With that in mind, players should start the fight by using Frost Nova and Corrupted Ground in tandem to generate a strong AoE that culls down weaker foes, while severely weakening strong enemies and riling them up for a follow-up attack.
Ideally, Death callers would combo using the Veilsong, which will result in a powerful combo of 11 attacks that can cause severe damage. If they make some tweaks in the Shadow Dragon branch Perks and end up taking the Bolt Volley Trait, this will duplicate the amount of projectiles this build fires but will lose some of the intrinsic power for abilities and other buffs.
Final Attacks
are the last attacks of a combo chain and often trigger certain effects, depending on the Perks Rook has chosen.
Staff Energy
empowers attacks with bonus damage and applies an affliction when full, depending on the Elemental Type of the staff. Final attacks from Staff can also Detonate or Shatter, depending on the Passive Perks the Mage has. Some
special Final Attacks
can be unlocked by
Traits
(special Perks) like
Soulburn,
which can Detonate Sundered targets.
If they want to use the Charged Range attack of the Staff, the Mortal concentration + Invigorating Beam + Death Surge Perk combo will ensure a strong energy blast that causes high damage. This attack even steals the life-force of the rivals, and thanks to the synergy with other equipment, it replenishes more Mana.
As Charged Range attacks constantly consume Mana, it will leave the Death Caller a little bit stranded when it requires casting a spell, but thanks to the Passive synergy selected, it will only take a simple Staff combo to regenerate the whole resource pool.
Alternatively to the Veilseeker, Death Callers can also equip the Unique Staff Meredith’s Legacy, which
deactivates all healing sources
but grants +10% leech effectiveness,
and it leeches health on hit. This is incredibly effective and can also synergize with the above-mentioned passives, especially
Invigorating Beam
. But beware, this is a high-risk, high-reward build choice and players should only pick this option when they completely dominate the Death Caller’s abilities.
Remember, the Staff also has a somersault Area attack, which, thanks to the passives from this build, has been improved in both AoE size and Damage, and also applies Necrosis to nearby foes. The same can be said about the Jump Attack, which can cause severe Stagger to foes, leaving them open for a Takedown. Thanks to the passives picked in this powerful build, Takedowns also recover health, ultimate, and mana, so keep this in mind and use every chance to replenish resources during battle.
