Bosses appear in Dragon Age: The Veilguard when you least expect them. While many of the main quests end with cinematic boss fights, there are also powerful enemies that are tied to side quests and some that can even be stumbled upon while you explore Thedas.

However, some of the bosses and their fights are more impressive than others. Some have cool movesets, some are set in impressive locations, and some are simply more cinematic than others. As you get further and further into the game, you’ll start to think about which bosses are good and bad. But which is best?

Hezenkoss/Rampant Ego

The final quest in Emmrich’s set of side quests is an excellent one. You head out to investigate a Rogue Necromancer who’s causing havoc. It’s set in a big, complex mansion and you’re essentially chasing clues to find where the Necromancer is. That Necromancer is Hezenkoss, and defeating her once she turns into Rampant Ego ends Emmrich’s quest line.

While the actual action of the fight isn’t anything special, it’s the aesthetic of Hezenkoss herself and the lead up to the fight that makes it stand out. She’s far goofier and memorable as a character than most bosses in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Instead of growling at you, she’s far more interesting and makes for a great end to the quest line.

Elgar’nan

Elgar’nan is the big one. The boss to end all bosses and the final fight in the game. Of course, BioWare saved a lot of the boss fight set-pieces for the end of the story, and it doesn’t disappoint.

First of all, the fight is in three phases, with Elgar’nan having different attacks in each one. Throughout, he fires out circles of fire attacks, slams down towards you from above, and rushes at you without much warning. On higher difficulties, the Elgar’nan is tough, but there are plenty of checkpoints as you hit cutscenes. This boss fight is the most cinematic in the game, as well as one of the most varied, so it ends the game on a high.

The Revenant Dragon

While Elgar’nan is the final fight in Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s story, it’s likely not the last you’ll face, nor is it the toughest. That title goes to The Revenant Dragon, which you face after killing all of the Champions around Thedas and then face off against three Revenants to collect their Essence.

The Revenant Dragon is level 50, but the fight works a lot like the other High Dragon fights in the game. It will still have weakpoints on its legs, need to be Staggered to be killed, and mix in range and rushing attacks to try and kill you. Since the boss is at such a high level, the fight is more chaotic than any other. You’ll be constantly dodging, firing off Abilities, and doing everything you can to heal.

Archdemon Razikale

The Archdemon Razikale fight in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is great because of how the stage is set for it. Rather than giving you free range of an area and the ability to attack from any angle, as you can in any other boss fight in the game, you have to fight this enemy from front on.

The one, then eventually three, dragon-like heads try to slam down to hurt you, swipe across the stage, and shoot fireballs at you. The fight is long and intense, but the 3D-platformer style structure of it keeps it interesting. You just have to have your wits about you once you reach the final parts of the fight, as it gets tough trying to avoid the attacks of three big enemies at once.

Fangscorcher

The Fangscorcher is another of the High Dragon boss fights in the game, this time coming as part of Taash’s side quests. You face three dragons as part of Taash’s story, but this one is the most memorable.

While the fight itself is pretty straightforward and isn’t significantly different to the other dragon fights in the game – aside from the focus on fire – the staging of it is fantastic. The boss fight takes place in a really cool, misty arena that adds a real mood to the fight and looks gorgeous. Obviously, you don’t get much time during the fight to look up and admire the scenery, but you get a chance to look around after it. It’s the best High Dragon fight in the game.

Amarell The Unwoven

Amarell the Unwoven is a boss you’ll face off the beaten path. He is one of the optional Champion bosses that can be found around Thedas, with this one lurking in the Hossberg Wetlands. At level 35, Amarell the Unwoven is also the highest level Champion of them all.

The fight is very fast-paced, but the highlight is how Amarell is able to plunge the stage into darkness in an instant, making it impossible to see where you’re being attacked from. With Blight everywhere, you need to be careful, making sure you dodge to avoid all attacks. It’s one of the toughest and more stressful fights in the game, but that’s what makes it stand out.

Calivan/Calivan’s Pride

Calivan is one of the earliest major boss fights in the game. With Lucanis alongside you, you fight the boss in three stages. The first is simple, asking you to dodge purple projectiles and attack from afar, but it soon changes.

The second phase sees you face Calivan’s Pride, a larger and more powerful version of Calivan, who is now able to disappear into a puff of purple smoke and hover above the arena before attacking. Defeat Calivan’s Pride and he’ll go back to normal for the final phase of the fight. Fighting essentially two different bosses as part of the same boss fight is a lot of fun.
