Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Finds Rare Nautiloid Mindflayer Dialogue

Baldur's Gate 3 Player Finds Rare Nautiloid Mindflayer Dialogue

Key Takeaways

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of attention to detail.
  • A player has triggered rare dialogue in the Nautiloid.
  • This is possibly because of the recruitment of Us, the ‘friendly’ intellect devourer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is becoming the type of RPG that you can confidently say you’ll never know everything about, as players continue discovering new things over a year from release. Larian Studios has been continuously praised for the attention to detail in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it’s well-earned.

The rare dialogue occurs during the game’s opening sequence aboard the Nautiloid. When one enters the ‘boss room’ where a Mindflayer is battling Commander Zhaik, the Illithid usually shouts “You, Thrall! Connect the nerves to the Transponder. We must escape. Now,” as they’re under the impression that the player and their companions are mindless thralls following the tadpole infection.

Don’t Call Me A Thrall

However, Morganlefey on Reddit has discovered an alternate dialogue. While the original poster wasn’t sure what triggered this dialogue, a commenter named HumanFighter420 theorises that it’s because the player entered the room with ‘Us’, the Intellect Devourer you can befriend in one of the Nautiloid’s first rooms.

As the devourer isn’t a thrall, the Mindflayer instead says “You! Find a thrall. They must connect the nerves of the transponder. We must escape. Now.” It’s a small change, but one that reflects that the creature being addressed isn’t a thrall. A couple of commenters have speculated that this line could be a holdover from early access, where it was possible to reach level 2 before leaving the Nautiloid. If you were playing a druid, you could potentially enter the room as a wild shape.

An intellect devourer - a brain with legs

It’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3’s cutscenes have been patched over the last year. While previously cutscenes would have featured the nearest companion to the trigger, now they’re supposed to always place the player character in the cutscene. This dialogue triggering could be an inconsistency, but it could also be a distinct form of cinematic as there’s no option to respond to the Mindflayer’s dialogue.

Either way, the amount of tidbits to discover in Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to astound. One can only wonder how much we’ll know about the game in a decade.
