How To Unlock New Boards In Super Mario Party Jamboree

There are seven new Boards in Super Mario Party Jamboree, but to unlock three of them, you must increase your Rank.

But inside all of this new content, and even in the overworld, Super Mario Party Jamboree secrets are hidden all over the place – some in plain sight, and some that take a little bit of searching to find, including references to Nintendo and its games, secret characters, and even hidden interactions when playing as certain characters.

1 Ninji and Pauline Secret Characters

Two Mario Party Jamboree Secret Characters, Right At The Start

There are a total of 22 characters you can play as in Super Mario Jamboree, secret characters included. You start the game with 20 unlocked, and can unlock two more practically as soon as you start the game.

Ninji, who first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, and Pauline, the mayor of New Donk City and the original “damsel in distress” from Donkey Kong, can both be found in the overworld. Take the balloon to go to the game mode selection, and use your binoculars to look for both Ninji and Pauline – Ninji is on a floating platform, while Pauline is on an island in the ocean.

All you have to do is look around, zoom in on them once you have located them, and you will unlock both characters automatically. There are no other steps required – unlike new Mario Party Jamboree boards, these new characters are not tied to the Ranking system.

2 Donkey Konga? In My Mario Party Jamboree?

It’s More Likely Than You Think

DK's Konga Line in Super Mario Party Jamboree

One new feature in Super Mario Party Jamboree is the Jamboree Buddy system. Jamboree Buddies can spawn in any Mario Party map and give the player they are currently following passive benefits. When you run into a Jamboree Buddy, they will initiate a special minigame themed around that character.

Despite its randomness, these Super Mario Party Jamboree tips will help you win more games more often.

Donkey Kong’s Jamboree Buddy minigame is DK’s Konga Line, a minigame that takes direct inspiration from the Donkey Konga series, a cult classic rhythm game spin-off of the Donkey Kong franchise that used special Bongo controllers to match beats on screen.

t’s a really fun reference to one of the most unique Nintendo games of its era, but you won’t get to play it very often as there is only a small chance Donkey Kong will spawn as a Jamboree Buddy.

3 Nintendo Switch Joycon Island

A Nice Homage To The Switch’s Last Mario Party Game

Super Mario Party Jamboree Switch Joy Con Island

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, players select their game mode by looking around the overworld with their binoculars after taking off from the Party Plaza. In addition to Ninji and Pauline, players can find another secret from the hot air balloon – an island that’s shaped like two Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.

This island’s design is more than just a neat reference, though, it’s actually home to home to three special game modes that exclusively use motion controls. On Motion Island, you can play Toad’s Item Factory, Paratroopa Flight School, and Rhythm Kitchen – all multiplayer-oriented games that can only be played here.

Toad’s Item Factory and Rhythm Kitchen are placed where the Joy-Con’s analog sticks would be, while Paratroppa Flight School can be found in the sky.

4 Big Bob-Omb In Defuse Or Lose

A Familiar Foe From The First Mario 64 Level

Mario-King-Bob-omb

Among the 100+ new (and returning) minigames in Super Mario Party Jamboree many feature references to previous Mario franchise games and characters. In the Defuse Or Lose minigame, which sees players try to stomp out several fuses before they reach a big bomb, you might notice a familiar face: the King Bob-Omb from Mario 64.

With newcomers such as Ninji and Pauline, Super Mario Party Jamboree has the largest roster yet, with 22 playable Nintendo characters.

In the background all of the fuses lead to the Big Bob-Omb, the first “boss” from the very first level in Bob-Omb Battlefield in Mario 64. King Bob-Omb was more prominently featured in Super Mario Partyand could be seen in the middle of his very own King Bob-Omb’s Powderkeg board.

5 Vendors Treat Royalty With Respect

My Liege, We’re Out Of Golden Pipes

Bowser Jr. in Super Mario Party Jamboree

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, playing as certain characters unlocks unique dialogue with the various Shop vendors on every board. Because they are all manned by Koopas, who ultimately serve Bowser, they’ll be more respectful to players who are using either the Bowser or Bowser Jr. characters.

For example, the vendors will refer to both characters as “Lord Bowser”, but they won’t offer their lieges a special discount on Mario Party items.

There are a few examples of this kind of unique dialogue throughout the game. If you pass Boo’s stealing space, but you are playing as Boo, it will say that it’s like “looking in a mirror” before asking for your target.

6 Shiny Wings In Paratroopa Flight School

Get Special Wings By Collecting 100 Coins

Super Mario Party Jamboree Paratroopa Flight School

In Motion Island (the island shaped like a Joy-Con in the overworld), you can select from three Motion Control-exclusive minigames. One of these mingames is the Paratroopa Flight School minigame, which lets players take flight using two Joy Cons as wings that they can flap to traverse.

There are three game modes: Sky Battle, Koopa Paratoppa Taxi, and Free Flight mode. In Free Flight, if you collect 100 Coins, your wings will start to shimmer! It’s a small visual effect, but because you have to select this island, select this game mode, and spend time collecting coins to see this Mario Party Jamboree secret, not many players will get to see it.
