Pokemon TCG Pocket has taken off among fans of the monster collecting franchise who prefer collection to battle. Part of the incentive for fans in Pokemon TCG Pocket is the game’s secret missions involving certain collections. Unfortunately, these missions may not be enticing enough for some players.




The success of Pokemon TCG Pocket has caused Pokemon fans to adopt the card collecting aspect of the game in a big way. Still in its infancy, new secrets and strategies in the game are still emerging, such as the list of secret missions in Pokemon TCG Pocket. The game has several explicit missions, which players can check on to see their progress at any time, but secret missions aren’t listed anywhere for players to see. These achievements involve completing certain card collections, like finding all the gym leader cards or completing the Kanto Pokedex, and net rewards larger than typical missions. Yet the game may have dropped the ball with these missions, as the rewards don’t seem to be meeting the desires of some players.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Rewards Must be Worth The Effort


When fans are dedicated enough to a game to complete difficult optional objectives, they are usually rewarded with special items, new game modes, or rare weapons, but Pokemon TCG Pocket starts at a disadvantage. As a card game, TCG Pocket doesn’t have many different ways to show players appreciation for their time spent playing. Common objectives usually earn players either Pack Hourglasses or Wonder Hourglasses, which can be used to speed up the waiting time to open new packs or use the wonder pick feature. Receiving a few of these items for activities that players are likely to do anyway is a fair enough reward, but for larger undertakings, fans would expect a more substantial prize.


Unfortunately, when it comes to Pokemon TCG Pocket’s secret missions, there isn’t much more to offer players. Granted, the bounty for completing them is significantly more hourglasses than normal, but most secret missions still only offer the same basic rewards. Some secret tasks also give players new emblems or avatars to show off in the game’s social aspects, but arguably the most significant prize is the elusive Mew card obtained by completing the Kanto Pokedex. Mew is one of only four of the games’ special immersive cards, so it is a rarity, but its stats in battle don’t offer much advantage. Only dealing a paltry 20 damage with 60 HP places Mew at the same power level as basic Pokemon cards, hardly the legendary creature that players have earned.

Most secret missions award players with 36 Wonder Hourglasses, 12 Pack Hourglasses, and 10 Shop Tickets. These hourglasses are the equivalent of 3 free wonder picks and 1 free card pack.


Pokemon TCG Pocket May Be Placing Too Much Emphasis on Collection

The reason for the lack of worthwhile rewards may be Pokemon TCG Pocket’s emphasis on collecting over other aspects of the card game. The major mechanics in TCG Pocket revolve around opening packs, gaining cards, and trying to complete the collection. Even though the game does feature a card battle mechanic, it noticeably takes a back seat compared to collecting, as evidenced by the game’s diminished battle rules when compared to the physical TCG. Players are also encouraged to pick their favorite Pokemon TCG cards to display in binders, which other players can see, reinforcing the idea that a complete collection is a higher status symbol in this game than a competitive battle record.


Because of the emphasis placed on collecting, Pokemon TCG Pocket has painted itself into a corner. If all the secret missions are about completing collections, there isn’t much value left to offer players now that their collection is complete. As a counterpoint, Pokemon TCG Live, the other Pokemon TCG mobile game, uses a battle pass system, gradually rewarding players as they win more battles. This works for that game because it is much more battle-focused than Pokemon TCG Pocket. There isn’t one area of the Pokemon TCG that’s better than the other, but finding an appropriate prize for completing the collection when that’s all the game offers, presents a distinct challenge. Hopefully, as more updates are added to Pokemon TCG Pocket, players will find better recognition for their efforts.
