Exploring the vast overworld is a major part of Dragon Quest 3 Remake, though sometimes you really need a good dungeon to liven things up a bit. While the vast majority of dungeons in the game are mandatory, the Tower of Transcendence is not one of them.

Wonder how being a raging narcissist will help me on my quest…
This dungeon isn’t exactly hidden, but it is somewhat complex. It’s home to some incredible items, and is a great place to train if you’ve just changed your job at the Alltrades Abbey. It’s also home to the powerful Words of Wisdom scroll. Let’s show you where to find it.
Where To Find The Tower Of Transcendence
Before you can actually get to the Tower of Transcendence, you must gain access to the middle continent. This area is reached through Nordy’s Grotto, though you must first meet with the King of Portoga and accept his request to find him some Black Pepper. With this missive in hand, Nordy will open the way to the middle continent.
From here, you must first make your way to Baharata, and then further to the north-east to reach the Alltrades Abbey. Take a quick stop in here to save the game and heal up. Right outside the Alltrades Abbey will be a sign giving you some directions – due north for the Tower of Transcendence.
There are no major obstacles along the way and you don’t even need to finish the events in Baharata first. You can head straight on to the dungeon, get yourself the Words of Wisdom, and unlock the incredibly powerful Sage Job.
Navigating The Tower Of Transcendence
The Tower of Transcendence is made up of five floors, though they’re not quite that simple to climb. There’s no big boss waiting for you at the end either. You see, this dungeon is equally about the strong enemies within it, as it is about actually navigating it in the first place. There are plenty of winding paths and treacherous tightropes that will send you hurtling back to the first floor.
On the first floor, you will see four Teleportals on the map. This might seem like it’s leading towards a complicated puzzle, but it’s much simpler than it seems. You must take the stairs in the upper-left, cross the tightrope on the second floor, then take the stairs on the right back down to the first floor.
If you’re struggling with falling off the tightrope, use the D-pad instead. This way, no small inputs will make you walk off the edge.
This will bring you to the northern Teleportal. Step into this one to be transported to the portal in the middle, which leads to the three staircases leading to the second floor. All three staircases lead to items, though the one in the middle is the only one that will lead to the very top floor, so take that one.
You will now be on the second floor, in the eastern section. There will be a staircase to the north and south. The north leads to an item, while the south brings you closer to the fifth floor. Take that one now. Once you’re on the third floor, simply follow the stairs up to the fourth floor.
From here, continue up the winding stairs to the fifth floor. Keep in mind that the enemies get tougher as you go, with the Ethereal Dragon being one of the most fearsome enemies you will meet here.
On the fifth floor, there won’t be much to do other than cross the tightrope to the next side. Do this to reach the western building, and then proceed down the stairs back to the fourth floor. There will be a chest here with a Battle Fork, but that’s it. So where are the Words of Wisdom?
The trick to the Tower of Transcendence is tactical falling. Many areas are locked off until you either fall off a tightrope or jump off a certain ledge to reach otherwise inaccessible items.
Every Optional Item In The Tower Of Transcendence
The Words Of Wisdom Scroll
The real treasure that you came here for are the Words of Wisdom, and they are hidden away in a rather sneaky location. They are on the second floor, in the chest by the small alcove directly west of the eastern staircases. It’s reaching here that’s more difficult.
Proceed to the fifth floor and start walking the tight rope. At any point before the halfway point, intentionally jump off it. Instead of dropping you back to the first floor, it will bring you to the fourth floor instead, the section right in the middle of the map.
From here, you want to drop off the edge in the centre where the floor collapsed. This will lead you to the central section of the third floor. Take the stairs here down to the second floor.
From the second floor, simply proceed east to the chest in the alcove to pick up the Words of Wisdom. Congratulations, you can now turn any of your party members (your Hero excluded) into a Sage!
The Words of Wisdom scroll is single-use, so make sure you’re confident with the character you use it on.
Every Other Optional Item
There are a handful of other helpful items to be found in the Tower of Transcendence still, though many of them are just as hard to reach as the Words of Wisdom. Here are all of them on a floor-by-floor basis.
Item |
Floor |
Directions |
---|---|---|
Sparring Suit |
1F |
Directly south of the Teleportal by the entrance, in a chest. |
Catula (Monster) |
2F |
In the middle of the room, reached by the south-west staircase on the first floor. |
Dieamend |
3F |
In the middle of the room in a chest. Follow the stairs up from the same room as the recruitable Catula. |
Silver Tiara |
3F |
In a chest in the middle of the room. Reached by taking the north-facing staircase on the first floor all the way up to the third floor. |
Mini Medal |
3F |
In a chest in the middle of the room. Reached by taking the south-facing staircase on the first floor all the way up to the third floor. |
Battle Fork |
4F |
In a chest in the middle of the room. Reached by following the stairs down from the western side of the fifth floor. |
Hermes Hat |
5F |
In a chest atop the staircase on the western side of the fifth floor. |
While on the tightrope on the fifth floor, jumping off closer to the western side will bring you to the exterior roof of the second floor.
With that, you will have completed the Tower of Transcendence. It might feel unusual to not have a big boss to cap off the dungeon, or that the big treasure isn’t at the top of the tower. But maybe that’s all part of the journey? To transcend past those typical feelings. Plus you can become a Sage now.
