Its True Enemy is the Shinigami
After Ichigo Kurosaki is defeated by his friend Uryuu Ishida, the Quincy King Yhwach prepares the next stage of his plan by absorbing his father, Soul King Adnyeus, as well as his right arm incarnated as the deity called Mimihagi. Mimihagi was sent by Captain Juushirou Ukitake to take the place of the killed Soul King. But the solution lasted very little as Yhwach quickly tore apart the right arm of the king and, by using his abilities, he promptly absorbed both the king and Mimihagi.

However, Adnyeus’ power defies comprehension and any measurement and, even for Yhwach, it is far too much to control at first. The incredible excess of power that Yhwach absorbed leaves his body and manifests as a sea of tiny black one-eyed creatures. This overwhelming substance pours down from the Royal Palace onto the Soul Society and immediately attacks the Soul Reapers. The real reason behind the torrent attacking the Gotei 13 is unknown, however, the episode’s key card gives the audience important information.
Translation of the episode key card:
The phenomenon of the Soul King’s power being unleashed from its seal, overwhelming Yhwach and overflowing through his body. This essence, which appears to be a black muddy torrent, is a collective of spirit bodies resembling an one-eyed infant. It attacks those recognized as enemies, crashing down like a tsunami, biting and striking with sharp fangs. There are various theories as to why it assaults the Shinigami’s, including an unconscious backlash against the fact that the Soul King was once sealed by the Shinigami, the Soul King’s true identity being that of a Quincy who harbored resentment towards the Shinigami, and the possibility that Yhwach’s will was mixed within this torrent.
Soul King Adnyeus’s feelings regarding the Soul Reapers are unknown. So the audience is left to theorize why the torrent of his power immediately goes to hurt the ones he is supposed to rule over. Furthermore, why is the Soul Kings power manifested as such horrific entities? These tiny black creatures with circular serrated fangs don’t reflect the benevolent nature that Soul King Adnyeus was told to have. Perhaps its appearance and behavior are much more defined because of its connection with Yhwach.

However, while these creatures overwhelm the soul reapers, the appearance of the overwhelmingly powerful Sousuke Aizen puts an end to them. Thanks to his transcendent spiritual pressure and godlike power, he’s easily capable of destroying the torrent simply by exerting his spiritual pressure and using his powerful Kidou spell: Hado 90: Kurohitsugi.
