While it’s only in early access, The Rogue Prince of Persia is already proving that it’s worthy of joining the ranks of the best roguelikes, along with Rogue Legacy 2, Spelunky 2, Downwell, and of course its developer’s previous title, Dead Cells. It hasn’t stood still for a moment since it launched back in May of 2024, with a slew of updates that haven’t left a single part of the title untouched. The next update, The Second Act, has just been shown off and it’s the biggest yet, marking a huge milestone for the title.
Developer Evil Empire has taken to Steam to announce what fans can expect in The Second Act. The main change you’ll notice in The Rogue Prince of Persia is a brand new art direction for the title, including a big difference in the titular prince himself. This update for the roguelike game will mark the end of the purple period for the title, with the prince now having a more naturalistic, detailed art style that better fits the overhauled art around him.
Everything from platforms and enemies to the big backgrounds you race past as you fight through Persia is getting an upgrade, and it’s immediately obvious when you check out the comparison video. Already an incredibly slick affair, this new art direction manages to push the game even further, with animations and a sense of motion that flows fluidly throughout.
In addition to the art style, The Second Act will also mark the moment the game’s size has roughly doubled compared to where it was when it launched. A new biome, bosses, story act, and enemies will land with this patch, with the game feeling considerably more complete as a result. Evil Empire is quick to reassure fans, however, that development isn’t stopping anytime soon – 2025 will be just as big a year for The Rogue Prince of Persia.
The Second Act for The Rogue Prince of Persia will launch on Thursday November 21, along with a sale to celebrate this milestone. Head over to the Steam announcement post to learn more, and to check out a few more details about the refreshed game art.
