Duskmourn: House of Horror gave Magic: The Gathering a look into retro horror with references to classic horror films of the early eighties and beyond. Tying into the world of MTG, Duskmourn also released unique overlord and Glimmer creatures which have dominated the set’s popularity.

While not the strongest of the overlord cards, Overlord of the Boilerbilges has enough play with its main ability to allow you to get away with significant damage and a large creature. With the trigger to deal four damage on both entering the battlefield and attacking, giving Boilerbilges haste with cheap effects from cards like Lightning Greaves can let you deal up to 13 damage.

You can also use flicker or bounce effects like from Legion’s Initiative, which is in red, allowing you to trigger an additional four damage while giving it haste to trigger another four in combat with just two mana. A classic red card with a simple ability, Overlord of the Boilerbilges has the potential to sling a lot of damage to any target.

Overlord Of The Mistmoors

With the highest mana cost among the other overlord cards, Overlord of the Mistmoors makes up for it by creating two creature tokens every turn and having the highest power and tougness ratio among the other overlords. This card synergizes well with other white cards in the set, such as Enduring Innocence.

By generating two additional creature tokens per turn, you can make them stronger with cards like Divine Visitation or double them with cards like Anointed Procession. Although Overlord of the Mistmoors is a little more niche compared to the other overlord cards, its powerful effect is hard to ignore.

Overlord Of The Balemurk

Combining the smallest impending cost with the most time counters among the other overlord cards, Overlord of the Balemurk mills your library in return for a creature card at least once every turn. By casting the impending cost on turn two, you can risk your creatures for the following five turns knowing you will get one back.

Overlord of the Balemurk is especially strong in green and black reanimator decks, which focus on returning your most powerful creatures and creating a big graveyard. Just with the two mana for a 5/5 creature, this is one of the strongest Overlord cards in the set.

Enduring Courage

In the spirit of red aggro, Enduring Courage gives your creatures haste and +2/+0, increasing your attack effectiveness. Like the other enduring cards, Enduring Courage returns as an enchantment after being destroyed, which this card is hardly phased by compared to other Glimmers, only being a 3/3 creature otherwise.

However, Enduring Courage’s high mana cost for red aggro decks makes it better fitting in multiplayer formats or as a sideboard option. Enduring Courage is, however, a direct upgrade from cards like Ogre Battledriver, easily improving on those decks.

Enduring Vitality

A glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark and horrifying set, Enduring Vitality is a green Glimmer creature that can allow any of your other creatures to tap for any color of mana. This is a strong card for three to five-color decks as it is a low-cost way to use your creatures to easily fix your mana while giving you a source of ramp.

Enduring Vitality even protects itself from single target removal and board wipes by returning to the battlefield after it is destroyed and turning into an enchantment. This can also save you from decks that focus on one type of removal or another, ensuring you always have access to your extra mana.

Enduring Tenacity

Fit for Vampire decks or white and black lifesteal decks, Enduring Tenacity deals damage equal to your lifegain of the same amount. Like the other Glimmer creatures in this set, Enduring TEnacity returns as an enchantment after it dies, turning into an enchantment while keeping the ability which is more valuable than its power or toughness.

This card is also a direct upgrade to Sanguine Bond, costing less while also acting as a creature and returning from the graveyard. Combining it with Vito, Thorn of the dusk rose you can double the lifegain damage or create an infinite combo for the win with cards like Exquisite Blood.

Enduring Innocence

Enduring Innocence is a low-cost white Glimmer that acts as a source of card draw when combined with decks that rely on low-powered creatures, which white is good at. The additional lifelink and Glimmer ability that returns it from the graveyard makes it one of the strongest cards for those decks.

Combined with cards like Delney, Streetwise Lookout or Mentor of the Meek, you can get a ton of extra value from otherwise underpowered yet low-cost cards. This is also valuable in token decks, as generating a lot of 1/1 or 2/2 tokens would reliably trigger Enduring Innocent’s card draw.

Valgavoth, Terror Eater is a very valuable black card in mono black decks that focus on removal or discard spells. By stealing an opponent’s graveyard by just spending from your life total, you can have instant access to dozens of cards by using mill effects or after one-sided board wipes.

Tacking on flying, lifelink and nine attack and defense, Valgavoth is a very powerful creature that also requires three nonland permanents to be sacrificed to target. The main barrier to entry is the fairly high mana cost, which makes it more useful for multiplayer formats or added as a sideboard card.

Enduring Curiosity

Using mechanics very familiar to blue players, Enduring Curiosity allows your creatures to draw you cards by dealing damage to your opponents. By giving it flash as well, you can set yourself up to trick your opponents into avoiding assigning blockers or even creating one yourself.

Enduring Curiosity fits perfectly into black and blue mid-range decks that focus more on generating value through creatures rather than from control cards like counterspells and permanent removal. Enduring Curiosity’s biggest drawback is its mana cost, but it isn’t too expensive to be slotted into most blue decks.

In multiplayer formats like Commander, Overlord of the Hauntwoods is a way to ensure multicolor decks both have the right mana to cast spells and ramp every turn.

Since the created lands are also tokens, they are affected by populate and landfall mechanics, doubling your ramp and landfall triggers. Its impending cost is also fairly cheap, allowing you to get additional value from it on early turns, or just by keeping mana open for instant effects on your opponent’s turns.
