Climbing in videogames tends to occur in one of two ways. You either hold down a button and run at a cliff face like in Horizon Zero Dawn, Tomb Raider, or Assassin’s Creed, or you get far more in-depth like in GIRP or Jusant. Peaks of Yore falls into the latter category, being a physics-full recreation of what it was like to scale mountains in the 19th century. Already a hit with a 98% rating on Steam, it’s been expanded with some new DLC focused on the Alps.
The Great Alps DLC for Peaks of Yore sends you on a train ride to the Einvald Valley where your climbing adventure awaits. There you’ll find a ton of mountains, rocks, cliff faces, boulders, and more to scale, with 23 new locations to explore and clamber all over. The mechanics of this simulation game have similarly been expanded, with new hold types that will help you get into places you couldn’t previously have attempted.
Even without this DLC, Peaks of Yore is something special. It’s simple to pick up but has an incredibly high skill ceiling, as its physics-based climbing system can be learned and used to become a master mountaineer, clambering up near-vertical cliffs at blinding speed. Managing to be both punishing and chill at the same time, Peaks of Yore gives you plenty of challenges while also letting you kick back and enjoy the view – either from the top of a mountain or from your home cabin.
The Great Alps DLC for Peaks of Yore is out now, and to celebrate you can also save 40% on the base game until Thursday November 21. Head over to Steam to learn more about the game and its DLC, and maybe you’ll begin a new career among the highest places of the world.
