Key Takeaways
- Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe has apologized to the game’s modding community for breaking mods with the release of update 1.6.14.
- He has explained that big updates will now be less frequent, and has added a beta branch to Steam that includes a previous version to avoid future mishaps.
- ConcernedApe also promises to coordinate with SMAPI for future updates, though he does remind modders he has a commitment to the game’s “vanilla” fanbase first.
Stardew Valley’s highly anticipated 1.6 update has arrived, and it’s been a bit of a rough one in terms of bugs. Thankfully, nothing game breaking has been found just yet, though performance issues and strange bugs have been cropping up quite regularly following the update’s release, which is forcing creator ConcernedApe to roll out smaller hotfixes to address some of the more pressing issues.
You’d assume that would be pretty great news for fans, as their game is getting fixed quickly and ConcernedApe is personally addressing issues, though it appears as one portion of the community has been getting irritated. Whenever a new version of Stardew Valley is rolled out, the game’s modding community has to update their mods so they still run on the new version, so frequent updates make the use of mods a little harder.
Stardew Valley Creator ConcernedApe Apologizes After Latest Update Breaks Mods
Usually, it’s not a problem, as ConcernedApe goes out of his way to work with modders to ensure the transition of mods to a new version of Stardew Valley is as smooth as possible, but a mistake was made with the release of update 1.6.14. In a Steam thread discussing the recent update, ConcernedApe addresses complaints from modders about update 1.6.14 breaking mods, explaining that he “accepts the blame for this one”.
ConcernedApe goes on to explain that the reason why update 1.6.14 has been worse for breaking mods is because he released the update without coordinating with SMAPI (the game’s mod loader) this time. Because of this, there’s now a more significant amount of time in which mods won’t work, and ConcernedApe has gone out of his way to apologize to any modders affected by his mistake.
He then outlines three things he’s going to do to try and make sure something like this never happens again. First, he’s going to make sure he coordinates with SMAPI from now on, and has also added a previous_version beta branch on Steam that will always be set to the previous version of Stardew Valley in case this situation happens again. Finally, ConcernedApe promises that since update 1.6 is more stable now, big updates will be less frequent going forward.
Finally, ConcernedApe gets a bit serious and explains to modders that he has a commitment “to the “vanilla” version of the game” first and foremost, even though he tries to consider modders when making updates. That’s why he won’t stop releasing updates for the game (something that quite a lot of modders are demanding he do) when he knows there are bugs present. We really do not deserve this man.
